What happens when good food and community come together? On Aug 19th our Villages CDC Garden Party at the home of Executive Director Mac Farr combined delicious garden-to-table dishes with a wonderful mix of neighbors and supporters. Credit to for preserving the memory of the event through her lens. Thanks to all who attended, and we are already looking forward to next years Garden Party!

One of the Villages CDC's strategic missions is supporting strengthening of housing, streets & community across our seven Villages neighborhoods. We tackle this mission from many different angles, including providing low-income housing units in our beautifully renovated duplexes in West Village, advocating for continued code enforcement to reduce speculation, and advocating for legalizing missing middle housing in revisions to the City's zoning ordinance. We also regularly support our longterm Villages homeowners, linking them to new funding or programs they may qualify for.

On Tuesday July 7, we welcomed our 50+ Keep It In The Family clients to an estate planning seminar to launch our 2026 Keep It In The Family program. The attorneys from our partners at Elder Law provided our senior client homeowners valuable information about living wills, last wills, Lady Bird deeds and other estate planning options, so they can make the right decisions for their individual needs.

Next, we investigate and resolve any title or deed issues our clients may have, and the attorneys from Elder Law will work one-on-one with each homeowner to draft the legal documents they need to be secure in the knowledge that the family home will remain "in the family" and continue to build generational wealth.

Over the coming months, we will also be doing essential home repairs for each client, both for their own current benefit and to ensure that their heirs - in due course - will not be burdened by inheriting a house with prohibitive deferred maintenance.

This program was founded by Villages CDC Executive Director Mac Farr, and is made possible by a grant from Enterprise and the Thome Memorial Foundation; it has now expanded into other Detroit neighborhoods and is this year co-sponsored by the Villages CDC, Woodbridge Neighborhood Development and Sinai-Grace Guild Community Development Corporation.

For more information about the Keep It In The Family Program, contact Chris Stommel at the Villages CDC ([email protected]), or. Or visit our website at www.thevillagesofdetroit.com.
