Black Bottom Gun Club - NAAGA Detroit Chapter Welcome to the Black Bottom Gun Club! This is the Facebook home of the Metro Detroit chapter of the National African American Gun Association.
(1)

We are excited to introduce the Black Bottom Gun Club, the first chapter member of the National African American Gun Association in Michigan. Based out of and serving Detroit and the surrounding cities, the Black Bottom Gun Club is named after the historic African American neighborhood that endured The Great Depression though World War II, as residents established black owned businesses, physician

offices, and social institutions. Black Bottom was the home of Della Reese, Joe Louis, and Sugar Ray Robinson. After World War II, city and state officials declared that the infrastructure of the neighborhood was substandard, and due to redlining policies, no investment was put into Black Bottom. Black Bottom should be a source of inspiration, proving that despite the lack of equitable resources, adequate representation, Black people will survive and thrive. The Black Bottom Gun Club was created in this spirit. Regardless of if the Bill of Rights were created with Black Americans in mind, they are ours now, and we will not let them go. We challenge any and all stereotypes and falsehoods about Second Amendment support and gun ownership among Black Americans. Our goals are to promote and train for safe and responsible gun ownership, self defense, and sportsmanship. The Black Bottom Gun Club recognizes the history and legacy of gun ownership among Black Americans and the sacrifices made to ensure that we have the inalienable right to self defense, so that those lessons can be applied today if applicable. We place an emphasis on understanding state gun laws. While the Black Bottom Gun Club is open to all races and ethnicities, we unapologetically place primacy on and center the unique needs and interests of African Americans relative to the Second Amendment. By joining us, you will help establish and grow a fellowship that will train and educate novices and experts alike, as well as benefit yourself with increased confidence and competency in handling fi****ms. In order to join the Black Bottom Gun Club, you MUST be a member of the National African American Gun Association. To establish membership with the national organization, please visit http://naaga.co/click-here-to-join/. If you are a member in good standing, please contact us via facebook or email. From club president and National African American Gun Association Midwestern Regional Director Chad King:

When I heard about the six-year-old child in Detroit who was killed after accessing an unsecured gun in a car, I began thinking and writing. Over the past few days I have had to pause, distract myself with other things, and come back to this several times. This child’s death is heartbreaking. There is only one prevailing thought:

She should still be here. She deserved to grow up and live to become her very best self. Her death was absolutely, completely, and totally preventable.

What I know about the situation is what I have read from various media outlets. The mother went into a store or restaurant to get food, leaving five children in the car. There was also an unsecured firearm in the vehicle. One of the children, the 11 year old, accessed the firearm, resulting in the six-year-old being fatally shot in the head.

The family facing this tragedy will likely face another. The mother will likely be charged with a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison under Michigan’s Public Act 16 of 2023. This law requires that those who own guns secure the firearm in a locked container or store it unloaded and disabled with a trigger lock to prevent children from accessing it.

Let’s be clear - those who own guns and fail to secure them should absolutely be held accountable if a child harms themselves or anyone else with that firearm, to the fullest extent allowable by law. Owning a gun demands responsibility because the cost of irresponsibility is disastrous.

From club president Chad King regarding the Constitutional Carry proposal introduced in Michigan:

House Bills 5653 through 5657 were introduced in the Michigan House of Representatives this week. Taken together, these proposals would make Michigan the 30th constitutional carry state if enacted. While the bills may pass the House, they are unlikely to pass the State Senate in its current composition. One compromise the Senate should consider is eliminating the Concealed Pistol License application fee.

As it stands, we do not require a test or permit to exercise any other enumerated right in the Bill of Rights. Our country has already seen what happens when government imposes tests and fees on fundamental rights. Literacy tests and poll taxes were used to deny Black Americans the right to vote. Those policies were intentionally discriminatory from the start.

Michigan's own fi****ms history is not immune from that context. The Fi****ms Act of 1927 has roots intertwined with racial tension. Though not explicitly written as such, it is more than coincidental that the law passed soon after Dr. Ossian Sweet and his family were acquitted for defending themselves against a racist mob in Detroit.

There is a striking irony in the present moment. On one hand, there are active efforts - both federally and within some states like Michigan - to shrink access to the ballot box. On the other, there is a Supreme Court case seeking to expand access to the Second Amendment and a state proposal that would do the same in Michigan. As Frederick Douglass observed, the ballot box and the cartridge box are inextricably linked.

I do have concerns about permitless carry. As a fi****ms instructor and as a regular citizen who owns fi****ms, I know that some people are not prepared for the responsibility that comes with carrying one. Some individuals should absolutely take a class before considering it. Others may lack the temperament or discernment necessary to carry at all.

Even so, I am not opposed to constitutional carry. Public policy should complement personal responsibility. Fundamental rights should be accessible to all people, not restricted by unnecessary barriers. Rights and freedom should expand, not contract. That includes access to the ballot box and access to the most effective tools for lawful self-defense.

The current law penalizes irresponsibility and negligence, but there may also be opportunities to provide curative measures that incentivize safe storage. For example, in Utah the state Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health created a rebate program for the purchase of gun safes, and Virginia offers a tax credit for safe purchases.

You have the right to own a firearm. But when you have children in your life - whether as a parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent, or caregiver - exercising that right becomes a privilege that carries additional responsibility. Rights and privileges do not exist in a vacuum. They come with obligations.

The privilege of being an adult with children in your life means you are responsible for ensuring those children are safe and do not have to recover from their childhood. The right to keep and bear arms also carries the responsibility to be trained and competent with your firearm and to ensure it is inaccessible to unauthorized persons, especially children.

In Detroit, we believe the overwhelming majority of firearm owners act responsibly. We also believe this is true for the vast majority of parents in Detroit who own guns.

Words are inadequate to describe the anguish the community feels. Without doubt, the mother and family of this six-year-old child feel it the most. No family should ever experience this type of tragedy again. While nothing can undo the harm, trauma, or bring this child back to her family, there are many things that can be done to reduce the likelihood of another gun-related accident.

From the beginning, the Black Bottom Gun Club has upheld the importance of training, education, and community service. Each member of our club takes the role of servant leadership seriously and with sincerity. As a community of responsible gun owners who value the exercise of a right our ancestors were denied, we believe we must have a vested interest in preventing negligent discharges and accidental shootings.

We must do this by being examples and ambassadors for those around us and by offering programming that supports the safe and responsible use of fi****ms.

In the past, our club has distributed thousands of gun locks along with literature explaining the importance of safe storage. We have offered free youth gun safety courses and have taught gun safety to parents participating in the Detroit Public Schools Community District Parent Academy. We stand ready to do so again.

Additionally, we are currently revitalizing our youth gun safety curriculum. With the support of our trusted partners, we will be able to deliver these invaluable safety lessons to even more families. The Black Bottom Gun Club stands ready to work with all interested parties - governmental and non-governmental - to serve the community and save lives.
The question remains, however, whether these efforts are enough.

Every time a child is harmed or killed after finding an unsecured firearm, we question ourselves and our work. We think about the times when we were not able to connect with a parent or caregiver who might have benefited from these resources.

But what if YOU connected with that parent, aunt, uncle, or grandparent?

You might be able to reach someone in your circle of influence that a gun club cannot. You can help save lives in your community by serving others, becoming educated about firearm safety, and acting as a force multiplier.

The truth is that the effort of one person or one organization will never be enough on its own. But the collective effort of many people and many organizations working together is how we make a real and lasting impact.

Sooooo armed and masked federal agents who have authority to violate the US Constitution, roaming the streets of an American city, breaking into home without warrants, rounding up and arresting/detaining American Citizens, and even killing American Citizens, with full immunity?

I vividly recall when Obama was in office, that was the chief concern among the alleged 2A "community"¹, and also when Biden was in office during COVID 19 restrictions. There was worry about tyranny and government overreach. Now that the worry has been made a reality, where the ufck are these clowns in critical mass?

Black folks KNEW these alleged 2A supporters BEEN full of isht by their response to extrajudicial killings of Black people by police. For a long time, Black people have thought that maybe there was a chance that they'd understand that Black people are the proverbial canary in the coal mine; the erosion of rights is tested on us first before the erosion and disregard expands to everyone else. We are seeing that expansion with 🧊 now, and yet... 🦗.

Who knew so many in the alleged 2A community would be statists? Shocker.

The reality is that the bulk of the alleged 2A "community" only uses the 2A as a proxy for their terrible politics. There is an inherent and willful ignorance about the interconnectedness of ALL rights of ALL people in the alleged 2A "community". It is quite interesting but not at all surprising once you realize the alleged 2A "community" is a façade, and is only a disappointment if you ever believed that it was real.

If this offends you, IT'S MEANT TO.
----------
¹: if you haven't figured out why I keep using "alleged" and put community in quotes, it's because the idea of a 2A community is only an idea. It's not real. There is not a whole lot communal about the broad 2A "community" - I've mostly only seen that with Black folks and the 2A enclaves that we've created for ourselves, because we've BEEN about more than guns and 2A. In my experience, those enclaves are about liberation, self-actualization and self-determination and all of its iterations and forms.

Why a men’s hunt camp?

Black to the Land is intentionally creating space to engage men because spaces like this matter. We need more grounded, healthy, accountable masculine energy in the world—rooted in land, responsibility, skill, and community.

This men’s hunt camp is about discipline, stewardship, and reciprocity with the land. While future hunt camps will be open to broader audiences, this one is intentionally focused.

A few hunters had to drop out, which means we have limited space available for Men of Color to join us next weekend for the final whitetail deer weekend of the season.

⚠️ This is NOT a beginner camp.
Participants must have completed hunter safety and have prior hunting experience.

📍 Link / QR code in our bio to sign up.

Hunters of Color—if this calls to you, step in.
