Marygrove Conservancy: Communication Specialist
About the Marygrove Conservancy Established in 2018, the Marygrove Conservancy is a nonprofit organization that manages operations and stewards a 53-acre campus in northwest Detroit, the site of the former Marygrove College which operated from 1905 until 2019. The P-20 Partnership is creating a neighborhood-centered educational campus at Marygrove that will serve Detroit students and families as a model of excellence in education that integrates their experience from cradle through college and career through a place-based approach and innovative partnerships. Mission Statement The mission of the Marygrove Conservancy is to preserve the legacy of Marygrove College through equitable stewardship of a campus that exemplifies excellence in education, serving Northwest Detroit and the city overall. Position Summary Housed within the Marygrove campus, the Communication Specialist will play a vital role in promoting the mission of the Marygrove Conservancy. This position will also support communications for the Marygrove Cradle-to-Career P-20 partnership. The Communication Specialist will actively collaborate with partner organizations on campus to find and tell stories about the Marygrove campus via earned and social media, and represent Marygrove Conservancy at functions, events, and meetings. This individual will reach out to partners, customers, donors, and the community at large supporting external and internal communications for the Marygrove Conservancy and the P-20 Partnership. The Communications Specialist supports a range of programs, community development, businesses, and nonprofits and connects the tenants on campus. Various projects and duties to be performed are: • Serve as media liaison and represent the Marygrove Conservancy at events and meetings. • Create content for the Marygrove Conservancy website. • Draft and distribute a monthly newsletter sharing stories and project updates. • Developing media lists. • Identify earned media opportunities for the Marygrove campus; pitch stories and develop/maintain relationships with reporters. • Writing and editing press releases. • Contributing to brainstorming sessions. Developing a list of feature stories. • Studying and staying on top of media trends; specifically, social media and SEO • Social media management. Create and execute a social media calendar; post, monitor and add social media content. • Community relations programming development • Support fund development for diverse program initiatives. • Assisting with proposal and grant writing • Produce internal communications. Organization/administrative duties. • Produce marketing and promotional materials and conduct campaign management for special marketing initiatives. • Build strategic relationships and partner with key industry players, agencies and vendors • Oversee outside vendors and agencies. Selecting and managing the agencies and vendors who produce marketing materials and or/provide marketing support. These may include ad agencies, print vendors, PR agencies or specialists, Web providers, etc. • Schedule and facilitate regular meetings across institutional stakeholders. • Draft messaging documents for stakeholders. • Plan, publicize, and execute special community events. • Communicate updates, events, and opportunities on campus. • Additional responsibilities to be determined What do you need to apply for this role? Competitive candidates possess the following: • At least three to four years of communications experience required; experience with educational or non-profit communications preferred. • Stellar coordination, organization, time management, and project management skills. • Demonstrate a collaborative work style with strong communication skills necessary to interact with Conservancy colleagues, partner organizations, campus tenants, and stakeholders. • Successful track record identifying stories, drafting press releases, preparing messaging documents, and forging and nurturing reporter relationships. • Strong writing and copywriting skills. • Experience administering social channels, including community management, content identification, content creation and posting. • Experience ideating, coordinating and executing community events. • Develop initial drafts of presentations, creative and content materials. • A steadfast commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and a commitment to infusing DEI into all elements of the work.
