Detroit Summer House Sundays at the Dequindre Cut Freight Yard are officially returning this weekend! 🔥☀️

Led by the Detroit House Collective, last year this event series became one of Detroit’s biggest summer traditions showcasing to people across the world just how we do it in Detroit.

The event is located on the Dequindre Cut, a 2-mile path that was a Grand Trunk Railroad line until the 1980s. Every weekend the area is transformed into massive house music parties filled with dancing, community, and Detroit energy. ❤️

The people behind the magic of Detroit House Collective’s events are . They are a group of four friends focused on unifying everyone through their love for music, life, and one another.

So in Detroit, as DHC has said, on Sundays we dance, lay back in the shade, bring the kids to experience the movement and sound and bask in the freedom to just be. So be sure to share this with someone you want to go with and we'll see you there! 🌞

Techno started in Detroit, not Europe. 🌆📣

So get it right when you’re talking about one of Detroit’s biggest cultural contributions and the communities who built it.

Join us and Detroit’s Chief Energy Officer Amber M. Lewis  and Detroit’s Ambassador of Sound and Swag DJ Killa $quid  to kick off 2026 with an annual reminder that techno was started in Detroit and was ⬇️

🌆 Built by Black artists. The genre was born in Detroit in the 1980s by Black DJs experimenting with funk, house, disco and futuristic sounds to create something entirely new. Groups like Underground Resistance pushed Detroit techno even further, and today Underground Music Academy is continuing the legacy for the next generation of Detroit artists to carry the culture forward. While Europe popularized techno further across the globe, don’t get it twisted. It started here.

🏳️‍🌈 Raised in q***r spaces. Long before techno went worldwide, Detroit’s q***r nightlife and underground club spaces shaped the culture around the music and made the birth of the genre possible. DJs like Ken Collier directly influenced the first generation of Detroit techno artists through spaces like Club Heaven, where Black q***r Detroiters and creatives built spaces centered around freedom, expression and sound.

📀 And pioneered by women. Detroit women DJs and artists like Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale, K-Hand, Zana Smith paved the way and defined the sound through radio, clubs, labels and dance floors across the city. Even while women were overlooked in electronic music, they were still building scenes, mentoring artists and pushing the culture forward. And DJ Minx carried that legacy forward through launching the Women On Wax label and collective.

The next generation of Detroit artists is continuing our techno legacy today through underground spaces, clubs and stages across the city and at Movement each year. ⚡️

In Detroit music has always been part of both our renaissance and our resistance and techno is just one of those tales.

So come to Detroit.
But as always, come correct.

Detroit is home to some of the greatest creators in the world 🌎❗️

But don’t just take out word for it. Join us and Ashley Stevenson .stevenson1 as we explore Detroit’s groundbreaking art and creative scene with Detroit muralist Sydney G. James and Eric Vaughn of Eric’s I’ve Been Framed .

Just down the street from Detroit’s historic Livernois Avenue of Fashion, the shop sits as a true Detroit cultural landmark. For more than 30 years, this iconic Detroit gallery has preserved Black history, culture, music, and legacy through rare art and collectibles. Inside, you’ll find pieces tied to legends like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alongside an authentically autographed original Jackson 5 animation signed by Michael Jackson himself. 🖼️🏙️

Eric’s represents something deeply Detroit: honoring culture while creating legacy. It’s the same spirit embodied by Detroit’s one and only Sydney G. James, whose work continues to shape the visual identity of the city. Her iconic “Girl with the D Earring,” Detroit’s bold reimagining of “Girl With a Pearl Earring,” towers over Milwaukee Junction on the Chroma building and has become one of the city’s most recognizable murals.

You can also experience Sydney’s work throughout Eastern Market and at installations across Detroit. BLKOUT Walls remains as the largest Black-led mural festival in the United States.

And one of her latest works located at the recently opened Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park on the has quickly become another major symbol of how Detroit doesn’t just create culture, but archives it to pass on to future generations. 🎨🔥

For nearly 10 years, Griot Music Lounge has been a go-to spot in Midtown Detroit for vinyl, cocktails and an intimate night out 🎶🖤

Join us and Givin’ Me Life as we highlight this Black-owned listening lounge that has been part of Detroit’s music and nightlife scene since 2016. 🌆

Founded by Karen Addison, Scott Boswell and Jonathan Taylor, Griot was created as a space where people could come, relax and listen to music the old-school way.

Tucked in Midtown at 66 E. Forest Ave., the 750-square-foot lounge holds about 50 guests inside with an additional patio outside. Inside, there’s a fully stocked bar and a vinyl collection of more than 2,500 records, including a full catalog from Detroit’s own J Dilla. 💿

In reference to the meaning behind the name, Taylor says: “In West Africa, a griot is known as historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet or musician. It’s a fitting name for an establishment that uses music to provoke memories and create new ones.”

Detroit has a deep history with music. From Motown and jazz to techno and hip-hop, the city’s sound has shaped culture around the world. Today, Griot is one of many incredible music venues across Detroit continuing that tradition. 💯

With rotating DJs, themed nights, cocktails, wine, beer and occasional food trucks & chef pop-ups, Griot is a great date night option in the city.
