Detroit woman sexually exploited, trafficked missing 16-year-old girl, feds say

A tattoo on a hand seen in videos became a key link in an investigation that began after another victim said she was being trafficked, court records say.

A hand marked with the number “7” appeared in two videos of a 16-year-old girl being sexually exploited, the FBI said.

The girl later identified the tattoo as belonging to Brankica Vukojevic, 32, of Detroit. Vukojevic was indicted Oct. 6, 2026, on three counts: S*xual Exploitation of Children, S*x Trafficking of Children, and Distribution of Child Po*******hy.

Vukojevic, who is incarcerated at the Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti for another case, is accused of sexually exploiting the girl and sharing the videos through Facebook Messenger.

A rapidly strengthening El Niño could have a major influence on Metro Detroit’s upcoming winter, with federal forecasters currently favoring warmer temperatures and potentially drier conditions across the Great Lakes.

El Niño conditions are already present in the Pacific Ocean and continue to strengthen. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center says there is now a greater than 90% chance of a “very strong” El Niño this fall and winter.

The latest numbers are significant. NOAA’s September forecast gives the October-through-December period a 98% chance of reaching the agency’s “very strong” El Niño category. NOAA’s longer-range outlook also says there is a 75% chance the event reaches a historic threshold exceeding previous El Niño events dating back to 1950.

For Metro Detroit, that could tilt the upcoming winter toward warmer-than-normal weather. NOAA currently favors above-normal temperatures across nearly all areas east of the Mississippi River during October through December, while parts of the Great Lakes are also leaning toward below-normal precipitation.

Historically, El Niño tends to bring warmer and drier conditions to the Great Lakes by shifting the jet stream and changing the path of winter storms across the country.

That could also mean less snow, but a low-snow winter is far from guaranteed. The National Weather Service in Detroit has previously found that more than half of the 29 El Niño winters studied since 1940 produced below-average snowfall in Southeast Michigan. However, individual El Niño winters have varied considerably, and major snowstorms can still occur.
