The AmeriCorps Urban Safety project is designed to build a culture of neighborly communication and responsibility in the city of Detroit. In order to reduce crime in the area, we are working with local residents to create block clubs, a forum for residents to connect and create neighborhood safety strategies. This initiative provides the spark for a network of residents that will continue their cr

ime-fighting efforts well after the program has moved on. We work to improve levels of neighborhood guardianship; reduce victim attractiveness and susceptibility; and provide technical assistance for wireless internet connections in residents’ homes, in order to enable citizens to use Internet-based programs to help reduce crime.

These students have grown with our program, worked hard, stayed committed, and are now officially high school graduates. We are so proud of everything they have accomplished and can’t wait to see what comes next for each of them.
