📣 JYM Update: Language Requirement + Extended Deadline!

Beginning with the current application cycle for Fall 2026 and Academic Year 2026–2027 (now extended to May 8), we’ve updated our German language requirement!

✅ Now: 3 semesters of German
➕ Plus: Enrollment in the IUCM intensive language prep course in Munich before the program begins

This update reflects changes in language study trends across U.S. colleges. By pairing 3 semesters with the IUCM prep course, we’re making the program more accessible—while still maintaining the high standards that prepare students for success at LMU.

⏳ Good news: We’re giving you more time to apply!
The deadline for full-year and first semester programs is now May 8.

In December, students and staff from the Junior Year in Munich (JYM) program traveled to Bonn for an immersive academic and cultural experience. Louisa, a JYMer for 2025-26 from Bowdoin College, reflects on the cohort’s journey through one of Germany’s most historically rich cities. It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Lisabeth Hock, who passed away on December 20, 2025.

Lisa became Director of the Junior Year in Munich Program in May 2020, stepping into the role in the midst of the global pandemic. A thoughtful and steady leader, she guided the program through an especially challenging time, always with care for students, colleagues, and the alumni community at the center of her work. She approached her role with energy, generosity, and a deep commitment to German studies and to study abroad.

Lisa cared deeply about JYM and the people who made it what it is. Her leadership and dedication helped shape the program as we know it today, and her impact will be felt for years to come.

We are grateful for all she gave to JYM, and she will be deeply missed.

A link to her obituary is available in our bio. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all who are mourning her loss. 🤍

JYMers celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday with a feast fit for the House of Wittelsbach. There was a turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce. Appetizers included a salad and hummus with veggies. For side dishes, students made corn pudding, perogies (family recipe!), and mashed potatoes. There was pumpkin pie and assorted cookies for dessert. And in keeping with the opening of the Christmas markets, there was Glühwein. Des war a Riesn-Gaudi!

Wishing everyone a joyful and peaceful holiday!
