The oldest photo of the Alger that we have (so far) appeared in a Worthington-Carbondale advertisement for air conditioning that ran in a few film industry trade magazines. While the photo wasnโt reproduced very large, the resolution is good enough to read the marquee. In the case of this photo, ๐๐ฉ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฆ ๐๐ฐ๐ท๐ฆ๐ด ๐๐ข๐ด ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ค๐บ (Janet Gaynor & Robert Montgomery) played with ๐ ๐๐ฎ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ธ (Edward G. Robinson) in a double feature. A quick cross-reference with movie listings in Detroit-area papers shows that this bill appeared at the Alger during the week of December 6th, 1938. While looking at the film listing, I immediately recognized the $250,000 Movie Quiz Contest badge from listening to โs podcast, . She tells the full story, but essentially a drop in attendance at theaters prompted the studios to band together and push out a flashy movie quiz with prizes totaling $250,000. Moviegoers would receive a booklet and be encouraged to see as many of the films from 1938 as possible, with at least 30 films being required. They would answer a trivia question about each film, and eventually submit their booklet and a very short essay for a chance to win. The grand prize winner would receive $50,000, the equivalent of over $1 million today. The particular booklet shown here came from the and Capitol Theatre in Whiting, Indiana, but the booklet was standardized for theaters across the country. One of these days Iโll track down a copy with entries from the Alger.
