Marc Crane and Arrow Office Supply Come Through for the Kids at Durfee

Last week, Detroit's Write Idea was the recipient of an incredibly generous donation of supplies from Marc Crane and Arrow Office Supply. In the three boxes, there were 50 spiral notebooks, 288 pencils, 288 erasers, and 2,000 sheets of looseleaf paper.

These supplies will go a long way to helping the kids at Durfee have the tools they need to write well. For example, we found it to be very disruptive to the writing process to for the kids to have to ask their neighbors to borrow an eraser; this donation will do so much to help remedy that problem, and the others kids art Durfee face every day not having the materials they need.

We can't be thankful enough for Marc, and Arrow Office Supply, and their generosity to help the kids at Durfee. Thanks so much!

This end is the beginning of something special...

As we put a bow on being in Durfee this school year, and through their summer session, we can easily say that this experience has been magical. The teachers and staff at Durfee, and throughout DPS, have been incredibly supportive of our want to help the kids in any way possible. And the volunteers who consistently showed up, each and every week, demonstrated a willingness to be a part of something special.

But more than those things, more than anything, this experience shown a bright light upon the wonderful kids attending Durfee. To see their enthusiasm, their intelligence, their wit, and their courage, on a weekly basis moved all of us who were there. We were hardly surprised such talent waited behind Durfee's four walls; what did surprise us was the warm and heartfelt welcome we received every time we were there. From the standing ovation in our second session, to the hugs in the hallway, to the kids remembering each of our names and calling out a "Hi" in the hallway, we were blessed to have been embraced by the Durfee community.

With the summer session ending this week, we will be on a mini break ourselves until after Labor Day, but then we'll pick up full steam at the start of next school year. School’s out for summer…but not forever!

We had a nice day walking around saying some goodbyes as the school year winds to a close. But in a few weeks, we’ll be back in full force helping kids write during Durfee’s summer session from June 30th through July 25th.

The kids save the best for last...

What a way to finish out the school year!

We had the best session yet with the kids this last Friday. Why, you might ask? As we worked with the kids on a reading assignment with the hopes of improving vocabulary and comprehension, one of the students struggled mightily with the task. Despite his best efforts, he just couldn't get through the reading. That's when two of his classmates stepped in. Two kids, a boy and a girl, came over to his desk and quietly helped him work through each of the words. About 10 minutes later, the boy asked for us to come back over because he was ready to try again. This time, with the help of his classmates to propel him, he was able to get through a significant portion of the reading.

Now, we think we can have a great impact on these kids and help them further their education and learn to their fullest potential. But nothing, nothing at all, will help a kid along like the honest, directed help of his or her peers. To see that type of engagement from fourth graders was incredibly inspiring.

We also shared Lemonade Day with the kids, a national event that helps raise money for local schools. It was a blast to see the kids in a much different environment; and, although they'll remain nameless, two of the volunteers may have even danced a little out on the playground, much to the delight of the kids.

We're taking a few weeks off, but will be back for the summer program starting on June 30th. Contact us to get involved and be a part of this wonderful experience; you'll find yourself learning more than the kids do.
