Today we’re launching a new video series, Wellness Wednesday! Each week, we will be spotlighting a partner from the Detroit Justice Center Partner Roundtable to continue the conversation around mental health in Detroit!

This week we have Julie Weatherhead, Director and Co-Founder and Grief Doula who was one of the speakers at our Partner Roundtable meet up and Mental Health Awareness Celebration last month.

She answers the question: What’s one thing you think we could do to destigmatize accessing care for your mental health in Black and brown communities?

Applications are open for our 2026-27 Artist Residency! The selected artist will receive $20,000 and a year to complete their project with assistance from DJC.

We want your project proposals that grapple with the question:

“What does a world without police and incarceration look like?”

What would it feel like to exist in a world without the police and incarceration, without jails, prisons, and detention centers? What would be the textures and sensations of that world? What patterns of interactions and relationships would transform for the communities that would be born as we realize these demands of structural change?

Applications open today!

This past weekend, DJC was honored to be one of the Headhunters for the 97th Annual Buck Dinner in Madison Heights. The Buck Dinner raises funds to provide grants to organizations and programs that work for social justice and hosts hundreds of attendees. This year’s program was hosted by Orlando Bailey, founder of Outlier Media. Guests were treated to poetry from Michigan Poet Laureate Melba Joyce Boyd and music from the Ian Fink Trio. DJC’s tables were also treated to a delicious dinner from . We ended the night with a rousing chorus of “Solidarity Forever,” and the dinner raised over $76,000 for local organizations. We want to thank all of DJC’s guests for making this event such a success!

This feels like a good moment to reshare our Op-Ed in Riverwise Magazine from last year, written by our Metro Detroit Restorative Justice Network Program Manager, Lauren Fardig-Diop.

“The mayor is taking a criminalizing approach to public safety, thinking that fines, fees, citations and/or mandated parenting classes will be effective in stopping violence; instead of looking at how supporting families and teens could work preventatively to re-engage young people in their communities, which has proven to reduce violent incidents in many other cities across the country.“

“I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I'm a human being, first and foremost, and as such I'm for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.”

Happy Birthday to Malcolm X! (May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965) A visionary who challenged systems of oppression and demanded dignity, self-determination, and liberation for Black communities everywhere. Today we remember his leadership, revolutionary spirit, teachings, and all his invaluable contributions to the fight for our collective freedom.

In Detroit and beyond, we carry forward the work of creating just cities where every life is valued and supported with dignity and care.

This year, DJC intently focused on cultivating deeper relationships across each facet of our work because the struggle for justice cannot happen in isolation. True impact emerges when we organize together and build networks of mutual support across our communities. The greatest strength of our movement is you—the dedicated community that sustains our momentum, so thank you ALL for being here!

As you read through our impact updates, we hope you sense the spirit of our core values—liberation, innovation, collaboration, and empowerment—woven throughout every story. More importantly, we hope you see yourself in the collective future we’re shaping, and recognize the shared responsibility we have to bring such a vision to life.

At Detroit Justice Center, we deeply believe truly Just Cities can be built and sustained, as long as we’re willing to do this work, together.
