Today, the average CEO earns 273 times more than the average worker in the US, and the top 1% of earners in the United States has a net worth 288 times higher than the typical family on average– a record high for the US. (source: The Aspen Institute). In a country where so many families are barely getting by and homelessness continues to skyrocket, worker cooperatives are a more critical tool than ever for workers to take back their power by owning their wealth and production means– and workers around the country are waking up to this! The number of worker owned cooperatives in United States has tripled over the past decade (source: Worker Cooperative State of the Sector Report, 2023). Join the movement! Check out usfw to discover cooperatives around the country, and connect with and and DCWF to connect locally with co-ops near you!

Meet some of the Latine cooperatives helping to shape the cooperative economy in their communities!

Tierra Fértil Coop:

Tierra Fértil is a worker-owned farming cooperative in Hendersonville, NC producing organic, culturally-relevant food while educating the community on sustainability. Founded by Mexican and Salvadoran immigrants during the pandemic, this co-op is more than a farm — it’s a movement for food justice, environmental stewardship, and community power. Their harvest grows local economies and cultivates cultural pride. Latinx farmers are sowing the future — one plot, one plant, one workshop at a time.

eQuality HomeCare Co-op:

eQuality HomeCare Co-op is a worker-owned cooperative providing high-quality, compassionate in-home care services to seniors and people with disabilities. This co-op flips the script on caregiving. Led by Latinx women and immigrants, it empowers caregivers — often undervalued — as co-owners with dignity, voice, and fair pay. Their model proves that care work is real work — and deserves real respect.

Boston Cleaning Collective:

Boston Cleaning Collective is a worker-owned cleaning cooperative made up of immigrant women providing professional, eco-friendly cleaning services. Born from a grassroots effort to escape exploitation, this co-op gives Latinx women the tools to lead on their own terms through shared ownership.

Roots4Change (Raíces para el Cambio):

Roots4Change (Raíces para el Cambio) is a Latina and Indigenous-led health worker cooperative in Oregon offering culturally-grounded maternal and child health services, including doula care and wellness support. In a healthcare system that often overlooks immigrant and BIPOC families, Roots4Change centers cultural wisdom, language access, and community trust– rewriting the model for what care should look like.

The history of Latine cooperatives in the US has been incredibly unstudied, despite the huge strides within and contributions to the larger cooperative movement made by the community, including extensive contributions to the largest network of worker cooperatives in the country, the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives. Studies by the University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives as well as Dr. Jessica Gordon Nembhard and Esther West outline a vibrant network of over 180 mostly urban Latinx cooperatives in the US today, spanning across all sectors from credit unions to agriculture, food co-ops and more, with numbers skyrocketing since 2004. Discover Latinx cooperatives making moves in the co-op economy today– including in Detroit!— in our upcoming posts, and check out a map of Latinx cooperatives around the country at the link in our bio!
