City Year Detroit

City Year Detroit City Year asks young people to serve students as tutors, mentors, and role models for one or two full school years. Think you have what it takes?

We have 116 AmeriCorps members serving in 11 Detroit schools. Send us a message! City Year is a national educational non-profit and a part of the AmeriCorps family. In Detroit, we have 116 young people working in 11 schools and with over 7,000 students as tutors, mentors, and role models. The challenge we're working to address is inequitable access to educational opportunities. Many students do no

t have access to the learning environments and resources they need to thrive due to systemic inequities that impact students of color and students growing up in low-income households. We believe City Year is part of the solution. Our AmeriCorps members act as student success coaches helping students build on their strengths and cultivate social, emotional and academic skills, whether that's mastering fractions or learning to work in teams-skills that are important in school and life. This is one year of your life where you devote yourself to a cause greater than yourself and there are few more rewarding experiences out there. Contact us with questions and if you are interested in applying!

A message from Sherisse M. Butler, Executive Director of City Year Detroit:

"We want you to support his work. Our ultimate goal is to make sure our young adults are successful professionals who are adding meaningful value to our society and our economy."

A core value at City Year is Ubuntu, a term of the Zulu tribe from South Africa that translates to “I am a person through other people; my humanity is tied to yours”.

As you reflect on this past year and consider your hopes, dreams, and goals for the next, we hope you will also take a moment to reflect on how you are tied to others and what you can do to make a difference for our community as a whole.

We hope you will choose to join us in investing in our young people, as a gift to City Year Detroit is a gift to your community. https://bit.ly/CYD30in30

🏀 Big thanks to Chris Economeas, Faith Sheffield and the Detroit Pistons!

Your generosity powered City Year Detroit’s Count Day initiatives across our Detroit Public Schools Community District partner schools—helping us make attendance fun and meaningful for students.

Because of your support and donation of basketballs, our teams were able to reward students for showing up, staying engaged, and making it count!

We’re grateful for partners like you who invest in our students’ success—on and off the court. 💪❤️💛

Our Story

City Year unites AmeriCorps members for a year of service and leadership development. We are proud to partner with Detroit Public Schools Community District working in 11 schools and with over 6,500 students as tutors, mentors, and role models for students. We know that every child can succeed, and that when students succeed, we all benefit. The challenge we’re working to address is inequitable access to educational opportunities. Many students do not have access to the learning environments and resources they need to thrive due to systemic inequities that impact students of color and students growing up in low-income households. A recent report found that in 2016, school districts serving mostly white students received $23 billion more local and state funding than predominantly nonwhite school districts, despite serving roughly the same number of children (2 EdBuild. (2019). $23 Billion.)

At City Year, we believe we are part of the solution. Our AmeriCorps members serve as student success coaches, helping students build on their strengths and cultivate social, emotional and academic skills, whether that’s mastering fractions or learning to work in teams--skills that are important in school and life. In return, our AmeriCorps members receive extensive leadership and professional development training. We ensure your year with City Year is a launch into future successes because if you give a year of your to helping students in Detroit succeed we do everything we can to ensure you move on with the skills, confidence, and credentials you need to pursue what you like.

So if you, or someone you know, are a young person that wants to make a real difference in their community, to be the change you want to see in our schools and our systems, then contact us. Each year we look for passionate individuals who understand how much students can thrive with some love and support from someone who cares. Be that person, contact us today for openings! #MakeBetterHappen
