💚Clinic Spotlight: Wayne Law’s Immigration Appellate Advocacy Clinic, offered for the first time in Winter 2021, serves low-income clients in cases in which an immigration judge has refused the individual’s claim for asylum, or has ordered him or her deported from the United States. Clinic students take on those cases and represent their clients before the Board of Immigration Appeals.

This past semester, Clinic students represented a client who, after living in the U.S. as a refugee for more than 20 years, was ordered deported back to Iraq, a country he last saw when he was six years old; another client who was ordered deported to Mexico after more than 30 years in the U.S. working and raising a family; and another who recently arrived in the U.S. seeking asylum from Cuba after suffering persecution there on the basis of his political opinions.

3Ls Erin Deschamps and Matt Antoniou braved the summer humidity to participate in Wayne State University's Community Homeless Interprofessional Program (CHIP). A student-run free clinic, CHIP was developed as a collaboration between health professions students and faculty of pharmacy, medicine, social work, law and physical therapy. It is a community partnership with the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit and provides outreach services to residents in need. Deschamps and Antoniou were on board to address legal concerns and provide appropriate referrals for individuals who visited the clinic. They were supervised on-site by Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic Director and Assistant Professor (Clinical) Kathryn M. Smolinski.

Spotlight: Exemplifying the lawyer as a servant for the public good, 3L Wayne Law student Erin Deschamps spent part of her spring break finalizing the end-of-life documents for a client who has a terminal illness. When it became clear the client could not travel to execute the documents, Erin evidenced the best of the lawyering profession by driving to the client with the Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic Staff attorney, Jane Warkentin, and Director of the Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic, Kathryn M. Smolinski. Erin’s legal work was life changing for the client and the client’s family during a tremendously difficult time. Erin is part of a family committed to honoring law as a noble profession of servants.
