Local Circles

Local Circles We offer Detroit teens an experience in community engagement, leadership training, and career and college readiness through our PAID research program.

Nicole Jurek founded Local Circles after working with young Detroiters in afterschool programs for 5 years. She observed that Detroit youth need more exposure to reading, writing, and critical thinking. She noticed youth who engage in academic programs over the summer find success in school and she saw youth who work over the summer fall behind in their studies. Nicole realized that we can address

these two needs—academic enrichment and access to jobs—by offering young people the kind of program that has been successful in other major cities across the US: youth-led research. At Local Circles, youth have a place to lead, ask, and create knowledge, while getting paid to do it.
