Center for Community Based Enterprise

Center for Community Based Enterprise C2BE helps create worker-owned businesses, cooperatives, & community-owned assets. The Center for Community-Based Enterprise, Inc.

(C2BE) conducts education, provides technical assistance, and facilitates collaboration to build a network of sustainable, locally rooted Detroit businesses that provide community benefit (particularly equity ownership for workers and producers), pay living wages, and share resources to help each other grow. Our vision is an inclusive new economy in Detroit anchored by a supportive network of work

er-owned businesses. Since 2007, C2BE has been working to strengthen businesses, including those owned by members of historically under-served communities and those seeking conversion to employee ownership. We connect clients to business know-how and legal services, including feasibility studies, business planning, marketing, succession planning, incorporations, bylaws and contracts. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

It is with a very heavy heart that I am sharing that Michael Friedman, longtime supporter and worker for C2BE, passed on August 30, 2025. I share the FB announcing post by his stepson Daniel Harvey from August 31st. There will be additional opportunities honor Mike in the coming days and we will post them here. (Daniel's noted "Monday" event date has past.)
ABOUT MIKE: He was Board Chair of C2BE at its founding in 2007, and remained on the Board until he began working on the C2BE staff following his retirement from Honigman. Prior to becoming an attorney, Michael drove a truck in Cleveland, Ohio for 14 years, and as a union activist, he was a founding member of Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU). TDU is still active and is the longest running rank and file caucus in U.S. labor history. Michael received his law degree, magna cm laude from Wayne State University Law School, his A.B degree, summa cm laude from Columbia College in New York City, and B.A. and M.A. degrees from Trinity College, Cambridge England.

Contact your congressional representatives immediately—before the bill goes to committee for a vote at 2:30 PM ET 05.13.2025.

We need your immediate attention regarding a critical federal update that could have serious consequences for Michigan's nonprofit organizations.
House Republicans have released the draft of a significant new tax bill, which is scheduled for markup in committee today, Tuesday, May 13, 2025. This legislation includes provisions that could directly harm Michigan's charitable nonprofits. C2BE is a 501c3 non profit.

Long in the making, Detroiters can now LEGALLY have live fowl. 25 years ago I had neighbors raising chickens! They were not waiting for this ordinance but now it's here.

Backyard farming is part of localizing the food system. A recent Animal Keeping Ordinance passed by the City of Detroit gives residents an opportunity to raise chicken, ducks and bees.
