LACD Calls for Suspension of the Al Qalam Monument Project in New York Pending a Comprehensive Review to Preserve Lebanese Cultural Identity
The Lebanese American Commission for Democracy (LACD) is closely following the growing controversy surrounding the memorial project honoring Lebanese Mahjar writers and the first Lebanese immigrants in New York City, amid increasing concerns and objections from Lebanese cultural, academic, and diaspora figures in both Lebanon and the United States.
LACD affirms that the legacy of Lebanese Mahjar writers represents an essential part of Lebanese and Arab cultural heritage, as well as the historical memory of the Lebanese diaspora worldwide. Because any project of this national and cultural significance must be handled with the highest levels of responsibility, accuracy, transparency, and consultation.
LACD believes that any monument established in the name of Lebanese immigrants should clearly and authentically reflect Lebanese cultural identity and the history of the first Lebanese immigrants, in coordination with Lebanese cultural institutions, diaspora communities, and scholars specializing in Mahjar literature and the history of Lebanese migration.
LACD is actively following this issue through consultations and communications with Lebanese cultural and diaspora figures in the United States, alongside ongoing efforts by Lebanese and international cultural organizations to reconsider the project to preserve the cultural and historical symbolism of Lebanese Mahjar writers.
LACD urges the Lebanese Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture to engage with New York authorities to ensure Lebanese cultural heritage is respected and represented in a manner worthy of Lebanon and the Lebanese diaspora.
LACD stresses that defending Lebanese cultural identity does not contradict openness or diversity. Rather, it stems from respecting historical truth and preserving the memory of Lebanese pioneers who helped build lasting cultural bridges between Lebanon and the world.
