Cecropia Moth in Oxygen Alley!
These native moths are about 4-6" big. They are in their adult moth form for only two weeks, during which they only mate and lay eggs, so they don't even have mouths because they don't eat.
However, they are in their caterpillar form for two months, eating leaves from trees, and sporting colorful spikes that look dangerous but are harmless.
They spin themselves into a cocoon for the whole winter, to emerge as moths in the spring.
Male cecropia moths can "smell" a female's pheromones from two miles away, making finding a mate easier.
So excited to have a habitat for these incredible creatures in our neighborhood.

Win Win Tree Program success:) Volunteers helped us get the tree nursery weeded and updated with new babies, and lots of saplings found new homes in their projects all over the city. We are honored to send Giizhigaa'aandak (Cedar) saplings to Southwest Detroit to be planted at the LandBack project.

Thank you for the good time Everyone.

Thank you to over thirty amazing volunteers for planting trees with us in Filter Forest this Earth Day. It is the best feeling to share such a vibrant day full of life energy.

Filter Forest is a vegetated buffer between our neighborhood and Warren ave traffic. It is also the site of an experimental "Breathing Room", a circle of evergreens and shrubs that we hope to be a refuge on bad air quality days. Trees filter particulate matter (PM) out of the air with hairs and grooves on their leaves, while inhaling carbon dioxide and exhaling oxygen. So the Breathing Room will be a way to look at how much relief such a dense planting can offer to us when we sit inside.
