In Anishinaabe culture, storytelling is an important part of relating to each other and the surrounding world through lessons of balance. Come join Anishinaabe Detroiter Hadassah Greensky around the fire at Circle Forest for stories and songs. Bring a snack to share.

The Anishinaabe are the people of The Three Fires, the Odawa, Bodewadmi and Ojibwe. They have lived here for thousands of years before the colonizers ever set foot on this land where so called Detroit exists today. Here’s an opportunity to educate ourselves on the history and culture of this land and its peoples, with Hadassah’s generous leadership. Efforts to heal the trauma of colonization come in many forms. Educating ourselves and being together with the right intentions is one of them.

Sycamores are so good at everything. They are super climate resilient, great climbing trees, fast growing, beautiful to look at, and host lots of wildlife. Of wildlife.

Do you have feelings about sycamore skin? I had a neighbor who refused the sycamore tree I offered because he said the look of the bark made him uncomfortable. Can you relate to that? I can't. To me there's no better feeling than my barefoot on sycamore skin.

The drawing was born in 2021 when we began the Circle Forest project. This nuthatch is carrying a shopping bag, which is a typical piece of trash we find when we clean up the parks. Each bag is a gift because it can instantly be used to collect more trash. This drawing appeared on our temporary park entrance sign, and on flyers announcing the project. We are so happy to bring this beloved piece of art back and into a wearable form.

The back is also drawn by Dave, referencing the shopping bag with the lettering.

Join Detroit Bird Alliance and Arboretum Detroit for a walk through the meadows at the peak of their beauty!

The walk will start and end at Circle Forest (3301 Palmer St Detroit) and walk through Callahan Park.

Circle Forest is a native habitat restoration project created by Arboretum Detroit and Callahan Park is the first Detroit Bird Coty park restored with a native grass and flower meadow in 2019. We will walk through other Arboretum Detroit sites including Oxygen Alley, and Treetroit 1. As we walk you will learn all about the meadow habitat and wildlife.

This walk will be co-led by DBA's Ava Landgraf and our Callahan Park Steward, Miles Honey! Miles is a neighbor to these spaces and has been helping with monitoring Callahan Park throughout 2026.

We will have binoculars for attendees to borrow

Circle Forest meadow is worth a visit. There are so many delicious flowers in bloom. I hope you like Yarrow. The whole place is drenched in her fragrance. And check out our very special Echinacea.

Meadows cool the ground and surroundings by 5-10 degrees. You can feel it when you walk through. And then clock the real drop when you get to the forest. Forests keep it cool!
