Why are we living in a society where I can actually say - I was at a site of of black people when another one by the same type of killer was taking place at the same time?

Why isn't Michigan one of them?

A is for Ajara, A is for Africa, A is for Angola... Happy Angola Independence Day! However, what does this actually mean? ⠀

As a Sierra Leonean American I often question what we are actually celebrating when we celebrate independence. Yes, we are free from the dominance of colonial power but are we really free? I’m not Angolan so I can’t comment on colonialism in that country, but what I can say is 'African independence' just feels like words strung together. We are claiming independence as countries with boundaries that were made up, not by us, but by the colonial powers we claim to be independent from. The counties we claim are all rooted in settler imperialism; we should start thinking of ourselves within our human narratives.

Death has such a negative and sorrowful stigma in western culture. It’s refreshing to see other cultures who find comfort in the presence of their departed and make space for them even in their absence. It cycles their love and importance they had on the family through generations. ⠀
