🚨 TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO APPLY! 🚨

The Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund application closes tonight.

If you’ve been dreaming about putting down roots, expanding your growing space, or stewarding land for generations to come, this is your opportunity.
To be eligible, you must:
Live or work in Detroit, Highland Park, or Hamtramck
Have farming experience or be actively volunteering in agriculture
Have a connection to the community where you’re proposing to purchase land
Be willing to dedicate at least 5 years to maintaining your proposed project

Infrastructure Applicants
• Must already own the land where the project will take place
• Project Budget

For seven seasons, the Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund has invested in Black growers who are reclaiming land, strengthening our neighborhoods, and building a future rooted in food sovereignty and community stewardship.

5 days until 2026 Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund applications Close .

Have you applied yet ?

We encourage you to apply if you are a Black grower living or working in Detroit, Highland Park, or Hamtramck and are:
1. Looking to purchase land you currently farm or plan to farm.
2. Seeking infrastructure funding or equipment for land you already own.
If you are a new applicant, you may apply for either a Land Purchase Award or an Infrastructure Award during this award cycle.

If you are a returning awardee, you may be eligible to apply for both Land Purchase and Infrastructure funding if you meet the returning awardee requirements outlined in the application.

Returning Awardee Eligibility

Returning awardees are eligible to apply if you:

1. Are a 2025 awardee who has spent all infrastructure dollars and/or submitted a land purchase application.
2. Have received a DBFLF award no more than four times.
3. Are purchasing land to expand your existing project or operation and/or are applying for infrastructure funding.
4. Can demonstrate the progress you’ve made with funds received through previous DBFLF awards.

Required Documents
All applicants must upload:

1. Photos or video of you and your farm or garden (or photos of you gardening if you’re a new farmer).

Infrastructure applicants must also upload:
Project Budget Template.

Land Purchase applicants must also upload:
Plot Plan.
Community Engagement Plan.

DBFLF 2026 Applications are open !!
There are only two applications tours left!

We’ve been pulling up to libraries across the city, in person, with intention to build real skills around how to apply for any grant.

This is for folks who want to understand:
• how to build a real budget
• how to shape a strong narrative
• how to define your project scope
• how to move with timelines that make sense

This is for past awardees, for those who applied and didn’t get selected, and especially for new farmers and folks trying to find their entry point.
We’re not gatekeeping process , we’re practicing it together.

Come sit, ask questions And Let’s develop quality applications together !

June’s Work N Chill took us to the westside to spend the day with DBFLF awardee Ms. Mozella.

With three lots to care for, there was no shortage of work. Together we cut grass across the property, cleared brush that had grown through the fence line, installed a new fence, watered the garden, and hand-tilled a new area for in-ground beds using a duck plow. None of us had used one before, but by the end of the day we had a new appreciation for the tool and for the labor it takes to prepare the land.

Beyond the work, we spent time in good company. Ms. Mozella’s family was out working alongside us, a few DBFLF awardees stopped through to lend a hand and share their wisdom, and we even welcomed visitors from Washington, D.C., who were in town for a wedding and decided to spend part of their weekend with us.
Every Work N Chill is a reminder that this work has always been collective. We show up, we share what we know, we learn something new, and we leave the land a little better than we found it.

Thank you, Ms. Mozella, for opening your space to us. We’ll see y’all at the next one.

We’re looking forward to joining Eastern Market for this month’s Happy Hour in the Market.

This gathering is a chance to bring together farmers, food entrepreneurs, chefs, and folks who care about building a stronger local food system.

We’ll be there sharing more about the Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund, connecting with community, and enjoying an evening of good food, conversation, and music.

Big thanks to Chef E and the Eastern Market team for creating space to highlight our work and continue building relationships across Detroit’s food community.

Fresh off a powerful Juneteenth weekend, we’re keeping the momentum going with our second Work N Chill of the season.

Work N Chill is an opportunity for Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund awardees, supporters, and community members to come together, lend a hand, build relationships, and support the work happening on the land.

Whether you’ve joined us before or you’re looking for a way to get involved, we’d love to have you.

This is also a great opportunity for anyone seeking volunteer experience while learning directly from Black growers and land stewards in our community.

Bring water, gloves, closed-toe shoes, and be ready to work alongside folks who are building a stronger food system and farming community in Detroit.

Come through, meet other awardees, share knowledge, and spend a few hours in community with us.

Honored to be joined by this incredible artist and Cultural Worker as we gather for our Juneteenth Celebration this Saturday at Oakland Avenue Urban Farm.

SOPHIYAH E. will help us honor the day through music, culture, and connection to the land.Accompanied by a 6 piece Band and using Sauti Ya Ardhi to honor Land an Earth through rhythmic energy and power of the Voice .

As we celebrate Black freedom, we’ll also be preparing for the next season of investment in Black growers.

Just 4 days until the Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund application opens on June 19 at midnight.

Join us Saturday, June 20, from 11 AM–4 PM at Oakland Avenue Urban Farm (9354 Oakland Ave) for food, live performances, our Black Farmers Market, children’s activities, community gathering, and the launch of our 7th season of awards.
