🖤❤️💚 Happy Juneteenth from Wisdom Institute 💚❤️🖤

Juneteenth is a celebration of Black freedom, and today we honor the sacred legacy of Black women, mothers, daughters, aunties, grandmothers, healers, artists, and visionaries who have carried our communities through generations of struggle and joy.

Our ancestors dreamed of a freedom that was not only about survival, but about rest, healing, abundance, creativity, and the right to thrive.

At Wisdom Institute, we celebrate Black women as the keepers of wisdom and the architects of liberation. May we continue to choose joy, protect our peace, honor our bodies, and nurture one another in love.

We are our ancestors' wildest dreams.
We are worthy of freedom, healing, and joy.
We are unbound.

On May 30th, Wisdom Institute hosted our first Wisdom at the Table: Kitchen Table Kickback.

And what a beautiful beginning it was.

Leaders came to The Table bringing their diverse backgrounds, lived experiences, expertise, open hearts, and open minds. Together, we held sacred space, kicked it, laughed and reflected. We shared stories about the wisdom we've gleaned around kitchen tables throughout our lives and explored the challenges, opportunities, and possibilities facing our communities today.

We talked about the issues impacting Black women and families. We shared the spiritual practices that sustain us. We reflected on the ancestors, songs, people, and experiences that have shaped our journeys. And together, we began imagining the conditions we need to truly thrive!

At a time when our rights are being challenged on multiple fronts, when hard-fought protections are being weakened, and when many of us are carrying so much, we knew it was time to return to The Table. Because Black women have always gathered around tables to tell the truth, make meaning of the moment, care for one another, and organize for our liberation.

This gathering laid the foundation for the Wisdom Rising Collective, Wisdom Institute's political education, policy advocacy, and leadership development arm. Rooted in healing, culture, community wisdom, and collective action, Wisdom Rising is being built with and by community.

We are beyond grateful to every Sistah who joined us and generously offered her genius, vision, vulnerability, laughter, questions, wisdom, and love. Your presence reminded us that leadership is already alive among us.

This is only the beginning of our journey together as we set our Table in community!

The Detroit Right to Counsel Virtual Teach-In on May 22nd, 2026, and will bring together community members, advocates, and policy leaders to explore the history, impact, and urgent future of Detroit’s Right to Counsel law.

Doulas and mamas are using their voices.

During Detroit City Council budget hearings, Trusted Messenger doulas from Motor City Doula Association and Detroit mamas, housing advocates and activists made public comment calling for Detroit’s Right to Counsel law to be fully funded in the new budget cycle.

The program is working! Right to Counsel is helping prevent thousands of evictions every year and keeping Detroiters connected to legal support, housing stability, and dignity. Yet, this life-changing program was not made a priority in the City of Detroit budget.

Too often, mamas facing eviction are invisibilized. Our stories are overlooked. Our children, our homes, our stress, our survival, and our wisdom are brushed off.

But we will not be silent.

We will continue to stand up, tell our stories, and demand that Detroit fully fund and protect Right to Counsel. Trusted Messenger doulas are helping make sure families know their rights, know where to turn, and know they are not alone.

We will not stop fighting to keep Right to Counsel for Detroiters.

We came to Lansing today to fight alongside our sisters and brothers doing amazing work!!💪🏾💪🏾 it was such a delight to see so many youth in the space participating in legislative visits and speaking about issues affecting them. Wonderful job!

So many powerful words shared, the passion was felt in the space.
