A woman almost didn’t come to this year’s Black Muslim Family Retreat. Three years post-divorce, five children grown or travelling, both sisters unable to make it she would be arriving at a family retreat entirely alone. She had never heard of the AHAD Collective. She scrolled past the flyer twice.
She came anyway. Then exhaustion and altitude kept her sleeping through the tahajjud and post-Fajr classes she had come for. So she volunteered for kitchen cleanup, expecting a short shift, and stayed for hours. Walking into the tail end of a session afterward, the first thing she heard was Ustadh Rhamis Kent citing that hadith. “It took everything in me not to burst into tears.”
She went back to the kitchen after the next meal. And the next.
That is what Imam Adeyinka Mendes and Ustadha Rukayat Yakub have built, four years running: a retreat where rest is not a luxury, children belong in sacred spaces, and the village is made by everyone working in it.

Seventy-eight acres in Lithia Springs, Georgia. Classrooms, a dormitory, gardens, an orchard, three livestock fields, a pond, a creek, walking trails.

SAVE Institute runs a high school on that land. Students learn academics through projects, agriculture, vocational training and enterprise — and when they finish, they leave with three things: a high school diploma, agricultural and vocational trade certifications, and a business of their own, fully launched.

The mission statement doesn’t soften anything: to save Black male youth from cycles of poverty, crime, incarceration and lack of purpose. Service, Agriculture, Vocation, Entrepreneurship. Boarding is available, because some of these young men are coming from cities a long way from Georgia.

Almost every Black Muslim youth program in America runs out of a borrowed room. SAVE owns the soil and teaches masonry, carpentry and animal husbandry on it. When their leaders sat with Kamp Khalil, Jawala Scouts and Young Muslims in our youth cohort, that is the experience they brought to the table — and together they wrote the Youth Group Training Manual.

Twenty-three years ago, Imam Hanif and Sister Baiyina Khalil started a camp in Paisley, Florida. This July, the 23rd annual session runs again — five days for young people aged 12 to 17 to be unapologetically Muslim and unapologetically Black in the same room, at the same time, without translating either one. 
They don’t go easy on them. The 2025 theme was “Conscious Living for Collective Progress,” and campers spent their sessions working through poverty, artificial intelligence and human trafficking, then designing systematic solutions through an Islamic lens. In between: canoeing, Khalil Khaos, and a talent show where one cabin wrote its own nasheed and taught the whole room to sing it. 
Over 60% of campers request a scholarship. Somebody pays for that.

Our Network Coordinator Malika served as a Team Leader at the 22nd session — bottom bunk, first time in 17 years. She wrote: “In a world where our mere existence is threatened, Kamp Khalil allows youth — and adults — to thrive, to experience joy, to feel, to be.”

MANA: We don’t compete, we connect. Incredible work happens in our community, often in isolation. So we bridge that gap.

Volume 49.

That is what it says on the front of Muslim Journal this month — the forty-ninth year of a Black Muslim newspaper that has not missed a run since 1975. Fifty-one years of obituaries, khutbahs, school anniversaries, court cases, weddings and warnings, carrying forward the publishing tradition of the community led by Imam W. Deen Mohammed.

Here is the part that matters for everyone reading this. In October 2024, a two-year-old organization called Muslim Culture Con — board entirely under 35, incorporated the year before — announced its first national retreat in the pages of Muslim Journal, written by its own chair. A forty-nine-year-old newspaper handed a brand-new youth organization its first national page.

That is the whole thing. That is what a network does when it is working.

A community without a record has to re-argue its own existence every generation. Muslim Journal is why ours doesn’t.

It is running a subscription drive right now—because the paper of record only lasts as long as its subscriber list does.

So much happens in isolation. We bridge that gap by connecting our community to its own strength. So does a newspaper.

Most of what you see from Islamic Relief USA is the emergency: Gaza, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, the earthquake response that went up this month. That work is real and it is enormous.

This post is about the quieter part.

IRUSA also runs an open grant pipeline for organizations working inside the United States — which is how a global humanitarian with a scholar-verified zakat policy ends up funding community work happening two zip codes from its own donors. It is not the part that makes the appeal videos. It is the part that keeps small organizations alive.

We can speak to this directly, because MANA runs on a $50,000 annual budget with one part-time staff member. Islamic Relief USA is our Community Partner, and their support helps us do what we do.

Zakat is not generosity. It is a claim the poor hold on the wealthy — a right, not a gift. What IRUSA does at scale is administer that claim honestly, and then let the money go where it is needed rather than where it looks best.

Somebody has to make the connecting affordable. That’s IRUSA.

*Kameelah Mu’Min Oseguera* founded the Muslim Wellness Foundation in 2011, and MWF became the first Muslim organization in the United States to offer Mental Health First Aid training. Then it did the harder thing: it built the Black Muslim Psychology Conference, an annual gathering for a field that did not previously exist under that name — and the Deeply Rooted Emerging Leaders Fellowship, for the young adults who will carry it.

Her framing of why it was necessary: Black Muslims face “the unique challenge of speaking the truth of our spiritual consciousness while also confronting anti-Black racism and anti-Muslim bigotry.”

Most institutions will handle one of those. MWF refused to choose.

This organization matters to us for a reason. In 2022, MWF was one of five partners that helped MANA design and distribute a national survey identifying more than 20 community priorities. MANA chose three that ranked among the top 10—youth development, healthy marriages, and support for young adults—as the foundation of our initiative to strengthen African American Muslim families. MWF helped us listen to the community and turn what we learned into action.
