The LatinXcellence event was fun to destress from studies and connect with other LatinX students and allies from the various WSU Graduate Schools. served fantastic food and drinks for us while we networked, generated ideas for the community, and had competitions over games like Dominos. The Latino Medical Student Association would like to invite everyone to our FINAL Hispanic Heritage Month Speaker event tomorrow October 15 at 4pm with Migladys Bermudez, the staff attorney at Justice for Our Neighbors Michigan.

Buenos Dias! Join us tomorrow for our next speaker in our Hispanic Heritage Month Speaker Series: Alicia Diaz, B.A., J.D.

Alicia M. Díaz is an Instructor at the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies (CLLAS) at Wayne State University, where she strives to facilitate de-colonized learning spaces in which Latinidad is central to the American story. A first-time filmmaker, she is Director and Executive Producer of Dangerous Times | Rebellious Responses which traces the 1980’s rise of the Sanctuary Movement in Detroit. Alicia is also a collector of 16th – 19th manuscripts related to the enslavement and indentured servitude of peoples of African, Indigenous and Asian descent. Alicia is CLLAS alumni and a graduate of the Wayne State University School of Law.

Hello Everyone! Join us for Diversity Week planned by BMA, IJI, and the Learning Communities!

While the topics of racism, discrimination and institutional injustices are complex and can be uncomfortable to discuss, these issues and topics influence our patient population and the way we practice medicine. The emphasis on social determinants of health and the influence of racism and discrimination in medicine is a growing topic. Coming from Detroit, a center for ‘urban excellence,’ comes with a greater expectation of experience with these topics in real time!
