Before they were leading Umoja Debate League, they were debaters themselves.

A little throwback to some of our Executive Team during their own debate days. Building confidence, sharpening their voices, and developing skills that would follow them far beyond the podium.

Now, they’re helping the next generation of young debaters do the same.

Proof that the impact of debate can last a lifetime.

Four weeks. Countless debates. New friendships. Bigger confidence.

Today marks the final day of Umoja Debate Summer Camp, and we couldn’t be more proud of every student who showed up ready to learn, grow, and find their voice. From first speeches to thoughtful arguments, we’ve watched our students build confidence, sharpen their critical thinking, and support one another every step of the way.

Thank you to our campers, families, coaches, volunteers, and guest speakers for making this summer so special. While camp may be ending, the skills, relationships, and memories will last far beyond these four weeks.

We’ll see you this debate season.

Who am I?

During Umoja Debate Camp, LaShonda answered that question with confidence, courage, and authenticity.

Camp is about more than building debate skills. It’s about helping students discover their voice, own their story, and speak with purpose. We’re proud of LaShonda for sharing hers.

To close out the week 1 of Summer Camp, our students spent Friday at the Umoja Village Campus, where they toured the village, visited the Howard Family Bookstore, stepped up to deliver their first speeches, and experienced firsthand the power of community, culture, and legacy. 📚🌱💭

Each day of camp is designed to help students think critically, communicate confidently, and grow as leaders. Friday was a reminder that those lessons extend far beyond the classroom.

Week 1 laid a strong foundation, and we’re excited to continue building with our students in Week 2. ☀️
