Did you know that, according to Creating a Model for Girls' Education in Ghana, "The average girl in Ghana only receives four years of education."

Girls’ Access to Education in Ghana sites a few reasons for this, and highlights that, “Sanitation is a concern in countries like Ghana, where many girls have difficulty attaining sanitary products once they begin menstruating.” This, in addition to a lack of proper facilities specific to girls, make it necessary for many girls to stay home during their periods.

The Ghana Education Service is working to combat these issues, but there are still many in need. By partnering with SEA, you can help us help alleviate some of this burden in the future and get more girls back to school!

According to a report by the Ghana Education Service, there were a total of 675 public or government senior high schools and 47 public technical & vocational second cycle Institutions.(https://myshsrank.com/post/how-many-senior-high-schools-do-we-have-in-ghana)

However, since the implementation of free senior high school in Ghana, existing schools have struggled to meet the new number of students.

B.Y.O.D. - When "free" Isn't Really Free.
Ghana has free K - 12 public education, but it's not as free as you might think. Parents have to pay for required items such as books, pens, notebooks, uniforms, science lab fees, library/tech center fees, and even desks. Yes, you read that correctly. In Ghana students in public school often have to provide their own school desks. The costs associated with "free" public education often prevent students from attending school.

We at Suitcases Equal Academics seek to alleviate the burden from families who cannot afford the additional expenses of public education. You can have a direct impact on a student's ability to attend school by making a tax-deductible donation today at our website: https://www.suitcasesequalacademics.com/volunteer-give

You still have time to make your year-end life changing donation to give students in Ghana a chance to go to high school. For as little as $3.40 a day you can send a student to high school in January 2022. Don't wait, act now! Together we can change lives and impact their future. Donate now to Suitcases Equal Academics at: https://www.suitcasesequalacademics.com

Dec 16, 2021 Children of sub-Saharan Africa the most excluded from education. According to UIS data, almost 60% of youth between the ages of 15-17 are not in school. (http://uis.unesco.org/.../263-million-children-and-youth...) In September 2017, Ghana’s Ministry of Education implemented the Free Senior High School program. The Free SHS program provides students with core textbooks, supplementary readers’ notebooks, and exercise books, and where applicable, free drawing instruments at no cost to them. The Free Senior High School program implemented in September 2017 provided hope to children who otherwise could not have furthered their education after junior high school mostly due to cost barriers. (https://moe.gov.gh/free-shs-policy/)
President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo promised, “There will be no admission fees, no library fees … no examination fees…. There will be free textbooks, free boarding and free meals.”

*However, even public schools charge fees for various items like teaching materials, desks, or uniforms, so education is not entirely free.
