We had a great day at the St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade yesterday! We were joined by Daughters from Alexander Macomb and Louisa St. Clair Chapters, and Sons of the American Revolution. The Detroit Chapter handed out nearly 3,000 American flags to a very patriotic crowd along the 2-mile parade route. We were honored to have State Regent Dawn Brady with us!

Today we remember those that served with bravery and honor to protect our freedoms and never returned. We honor their sacrifice and remember their families as they continue to grieve. As you enjoy this long weekend, please take a moment to remember those who were willing to protect our freedoms and go in to the unknown without fear.

“From Revolution to Remembrance: Patriots of Color and Their Descendants, A 10 Million Names Event Featuring a Conversation with Ken Burns and Dr. Vincent Brown

Thursday, June 18, 6–7:15 p.m. (ET)

Free to register, donations appreciated

Join in this virtual event in support of 10 Million Names—a collaborative project dedicated to recovering the names of the estimated 10 million men, women, and children of African descent who were enslaved in pre- and post-colonial America (specifically, the territory that would become the United States) before 1865.

On the eve of Juneteenth, this special event will feature a conversation between acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns (The American Revolution) and historian Dr. Vincent Brown, moderated by American Ancestors President & CEO Ryan Woods. Together they will explore the history and enduring significance of Patriots of color and the vital, yet often overlooked, role they played in the American Revolution.

The event will also celebrate a major milestone: the release of freely accessible family trees, developed in collaboration with the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, linking Patriots of color to descendants born before 1900 and making it easier for living individuals to trace their connection to the American Revolution.

By participating in this event, you are not only engaging with history—you are helping to restore it. Proceeds directly support the mission of 10 Million Names, advancing the work of recovery, remembrance, and historical restoration.

Today we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who led the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. According to the Nobel Prize website, “between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times,” utilizing his oratory skills and peaceful demonstration to craft words to demand equality and fairness for all people. Dr. King continues to guide those who want to utilize their voices for change and equality as an example of peaceful protest and revolution. In the words of Dr. King from his famous “I Have a Dream” speech: “Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. So even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
