Building a Movement and a Building a Better Future in Roanoke! 🍯

We are still inspired by the incredible evening at the historic Grandin Theatre for the screening of our film, Shared Legacies: The African-American Jewish Civil Rights Alliance.

It was a powerful night of history, reflection, and community building, featuring a special moderated discussion with our Chairman and civil rights icon, Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. 🗣️

A huge thank you to the Roanoke Jewish Federation for presenting this screening and to the Harrison Museum for African American Culture for their partnership. We are honored that the proceeds from this event supported the museum’s mission to preserve and celebrate African American history and art in the Roanoke Valley. 🏛️🎨

Together, we are bridging the divide and ensuring that our shared history continues to guide us toward a future free from antisemitism and racism.

“In order to shape the future, you have to know the past.” — Dr. Benjamin Chavis

Remembering the past is the only way to safeguard the future. On this Yom Hashoah, we reflect on the six million lives lost and the incredible resilience of those who survived. 🕯️

The video above shares the legacy of Eliezer Ayalon, a Holocaust survivor who turned the darkness of his history into a beacon of hope. Inspired by a simple cup of honey—his mother’s final gift to him—we are committed to spreading sweetness, light, and the truth of shared histories. 🍯✨

Eli’s story reminds us that “Never Again” isn’t just a phrase; it’s a call to action. It’s about speaking up against modern genocide and ensuring that the sweetness of humanity outshines the bitterness of hate.

Let’s take Eli’s cup and Spill The Honey today. 🐝💛

“The pursuit of liberation is a shared journey.” 🕊️✨

We are proud to share this powerful new op-ed by our very own Spill the Honey Chair, Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr, (), and Rabbi Dr. Judy Schindler ( ).

In “The Liberation Theology of the Passover Seder,” they explore the profound spiritual and historical parallels between the Black and Jewish experiences. At Spill the Honey, we believe that understanding our interconnected histories is the key to building a future rooted in justice and solidarity.

Passover reminds us that the cry for freedom is universal. Let’s continue to find our common ground and work toward collective liberation for all. 🍯

🕊️ Spiritual Warriors: A Legacy of Conscience

Today, as we commemorate the anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March, we look back at these powerful moments at Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church.

Featured here are two true giants of justice and “Spiritual Warriors”: Rabbi Everett Gendler and Reverend . 🕯️✊🏾

Rabbi Gendler, often called the “father of Jewish environmentalism,” was a pivotal link in the Black-Jewish civil rights alliance, leading delegations of rabbis to stand in solidarity with Dr. King and the SCLC. Alongside Reverend Jesse Jackson, these leaders showed the world that faith is not just found in the pews—it is found in the streets, on the bridges, and in the struggle for human dignity.

At Spill the Honey, we celebrate these historic images because they represent the “Shared Legacies” we continue to build upon today. From the sanctuary of Brown Chapel to the steps of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, their partnership reminds us that when we march together, we move the soul of the nation. 🍯

Let us honor their courage by continuing the work they started.

🕊️ Crossing the Bridge Together: Selma 61

We stand in solemn remembrance of the 61st anniversary of Bloody Sunday. On March 7 in 1965, 600 brave foot soldiers attempted to march from Selma to Montgomery to demand the sacred right to vote. Though they were met with violence on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, their courage ignited a movement that changed the world.

At Spill the Honey, we honor the “Shared Legacies” of the Black and Jewish coalition that stood shoulder-to-shoulder during these turning points in history. We remember leaders like John Lewis, Hosea Williams, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., alongside Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and the many others who understood that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. 🤝🍯

As we watch the commemorative march across the bridge today, we are reminded that the “moral arc of the universe” does not bend toward justice on its own—it requires the collective strength of people from all walks of life.

Let us continue to protect the right to vote and build bridges of understanding for the generations to come. 🕊️✨
