Detroit Right to Counsel Coalition We fight for the right to free legal representation when facing eviction- Housing is a human right.

A right to counsel for low-income tenants can play a major role in preventing evictions and housing displacement. Currently, only the State of Washington guarantees a right to counsel in housing-related cases. However, in recent years, cities such as Toledo, Baltimore, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Newark, San Francisco, Cleveland and others have passed right to counsel ordinances, proving to significantly reduce evictions and impacting rates of housing displacement and homelessness in communities.

Right to Counsel is working,and now is the time to protect it!!

Join the Detroit Right to Counsel Coalition for a virtual Right to Counsel Teach-In as we share the story of how Detroit won this historic ordinance, why it matters, and what it will take to keep it fully funded and accessible for Detroit tenants.

Eviction prevention is housing justice. It is family stability. It is community care. When tenants have legal representation, more families are able to stay housed, understand their rights, and fight back against unjust displacement.

This Teach-In is an opportunity to learn, connect, and take action!

We want to take a moment to thank each of you for what you brought into the room during the public hearing last night! The way this coalition showed up and showed out was powerful and undeniable.

Our Right to Counsel funding agenda is now part of the official record, both within the City Council meeting minutes and in the public hearing itself, where we had the chance to go deeper. And yes, we made the most of every second of that full 1 minute and 40 seconds. It will speak to how deeply we believe in this work and in each other.

Nearly all of us gave our testimony in the time we had...that says a lot about the intention and clarity each of you brought forward. And to our partners at UHC, your testimony carried so much history and depth. Truly, it deserved even more time!

What moved me the most was hearing others lift up Right to Counsel funding in their own testimony that was inspired by us!! That is what alignment looks like. That is what momentum feels like yall!!! Here are some pics!
