The great work of those who are employed and volunteer with Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance is not to be ignored. BUT, here is what is being missed by the City of Destin (who has zero jurisdiction at Crab Island)…the destruction of the seagrass beds at Crab Island, year after year, by boat props. Just when the seagrass begins to ‘heal’ after a short few months of Winter, boats come back with full vengeance across the shallow waters, and just like that, the wounds of destruction are sliced back open.
Let’s try this again…
❓Who at the City of Destin Government, is working to protect the seagrass beds located at Crab Island?
It does not appear Bobby Wagner, Mayor of Destin, (who has garnished a tremendous amount of media attention as of late, for “saving Crab Island” from the very entity, the Dept. Of the Interior, charged with protecting it for future generations) has full knowledge with a complete understanding the missions and general management plans of both Gulf lslands National Seashore, and the National Park Service are key.
The mission of the National Park Service “preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.”
Gulf Islands National Seashore General Management Plan is a 562 page document that “guides management decisions and policies” for the Seashore. Think of it as a Master Plan for policy and procedure management of the public lands located within the boundaries of the Seashore.
Bottom line…
Missing the pulse of federally protected lands and the creatures that inhabitat them is called failure. Crab Island does NOT belong to ONLY one set of ‘users.’ It belongs to the very creatures who call it home, and their home is being destroyed season after season. The City of Destin, led by current Mayor, Bobby Wagner, is more focused on the wrong dollars generated than in protecting its seagrass beds and preserving it for future use. ***Focusing on generating the right dollars is a boon to Destin’s economy that comes with environmental protections and financial benefits, not straight up environmental destruction.
