This Holiday Season...

This Black Friday, rather than indulging your nearest retailer, think about the real bargains available from the natural environment. Seagrass provides a whole range of commodities completely free to the user. We need to make sure they're still available to users in the future

ANNOUNCEMENT.

Through many conversations over the past week, on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the management of this page was turned over to Marcie Bell • Destin Citizen Advocate. Both her dedication to protecting the seagrass beds, and her ability to effectively and efficiently reach the public through her online blog is more than this grassroots effort startup could manage.

Please join her in her efforts to Preserve and Protect the Sea Grass beds located at Crab Island and throughout Gulf Islands National Seashore and Choctawhatchee Bay.

The great work of those who are employed and volunteer with Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance is not to be ignored. BUT, here is what is being missed by the City of Destin (who has zero jurisdiction at Crab Island)…the destruction of the seagrass beds at Crab Island, year after year, by boat props. Just when the seagrass begins to ‘heal’ after a short few months of Winter, boats come back with full vengeance across the shallow waters, and just like that, the wounds of destruction are sliced back open.

Let’s try this again…
❓Who at the City of Destin Government, is working to protect the seagrass beds located at Crab Island?

It does not appear Bobby Wagner, Mayor of Destin, (who has garnished a tremendous amount of media attention as of late, for “saving Crab Island” from the very entity, the Dept. Of the Interior, charged with protecting it for future generations) has full knowledge with a complete understanding the missions and general management plans of both Gulf lslands National Seashore, and the National Park Service are key.

The mission of the National Park Service “preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.”

Gulf Islands National Seashore General Management Plan is a 562 page document that “guides management decisions and policies” for the Seashore. Think of it as a Master Plan for policy and procedure management of the public lands located within the boundaries of the Seashore.

Bottom line…

Missing the pulse of federally protected lands and the creatures that inhabitat them is called failure. Crab Island does NOT belong to ONLY one set of ‘users.’ It belongs to the very creatures who call it home, and their home is being destroyed season after season. The City of Destin, led by current Mayor, Bobby Wagner, is more focused on the wrong dollars generated than in protecting its seagrass beds and preserving it for future use. ***Focusing on generating the right dollars is a boon to Destin’s economy that comes with environmental protections and financial benefits, not straight up environmental destruction.

Gulf Islands National Seashore thanks for sharing this information.

Many plastic products are single-use items that are designed to be thrown out, like water bottles or take-out containers. These are used and discarded quickly. If this waste isn’t properly disposed of or managed, it can end up on a beach or in the ocean.

Plastic is the most common form of marine debris. Unlike some other kinds of waste, plastic doesn’t decompose. When it breaks into tiny pieces, its called microplastics.

The good news is, we can do something about it.

Knowing where it used to be, is as important as knowing where it is now.

Knowing where seagrass isn’t can be just as useful as knowing where it is…

Did you know you can now upload absence data to SeagrassSpotter? If you know where seagrass used to exist and now no longer does, let us know at SeagrassSpotter.org or via the app 🔎🌱
