Long Island Water

Long Island Water Long Island Water is an outreach program designed to inform consumers about the threats facing Long Island's ground and surface waters, and possible solutions.

Long Island has a water problem. Contamination from sewage, pesticides, and other pollutants, as well as the over-pumping of water supplies, threaten Long Island's ground and surface waters. Fortunately, individuals and organizations across Long Island are working hard to conserve and protect our water and our quality of life for future generations. The goal of Jump In! is to inform consumers abou

t Long Island's water and to raise awareness regarding the current issues facing this precious resource. To achieve our goal, we are partnering with businesses, civic organizations, local governments, and water districts that share our passion and want to ensure the quality of our water. We also provide educational materials via our website, and we will soon be producing live-streaming "talks" geared towards enhancing the general public's understanding of water quality and quantity. The Jump In! campaign and LIWater.org were developed by Grassroots Environmental Education under a grant from the Long Island Community Foundation.

Overflowing with fertilizer? A new map, known as the Long Island Sound Lawn Fertilizer Outreach Targeting Tool, can help.

The tool aims to help educators, communicators, and resource groups identify where nitrogen pollution from fertilizer would most likely be reduced by the right neighborhood behavior-change program. Click the link to learn more, and find nitrogen hotspots near you.

Photo: David Dickson. The tool allows a user to find places around Long Island Sound where pollution outreach campaigns would be most effective.
