In a state with such a dense white population such as Iowa, events of this nature are rare yet meaningful.

For Ford, Republican candidates’ decision to skip the event is perplexing given the near-record voter turnout among Black and Latino voters in 2020, as well as the shifting margins among those groups. “This is the highest in the history of America you have minorities voting for a presidential candidate,” Ford said.

Organizers had hoped to attract Republicans ahead of a caucus that falls on Martin Luther King Day — and as the party talks about winning more voters of color.
