“The most important thing I look for in a musician is whether he knows how to listen.” -Duke Ellington

An emphasis on listening is common among high-level musicians. Why do you think that is?

In various schools of meditation, an emphasis is put on returning to the breath once you’re pulled into your thoughts. A focus on the breath provides a constant rhythmic stimulus to bring you back into a state of tranquility and the experience of watching thoughts come and go.

Listening is your best practice as something to fall back on when you become self-conscious, sense chaos emerging, or aren’t sure what to do. Focus on the collective output as the breath. When your attention returns to the group’s sound, you’re pulled back into the music and out of your thoughts.

“If I knew where the music was going, I wouldn’t bother playing it.” -Keith Jarrett

Music is a language and a jam is a conversation. Think about the best conversations you’ve ever had.

Do you have to struggle to be heard?

Is everyone talking over each other?

Are you considering the point others are making and giving thought to your own responses?

These are things that should be considered when going to play music with folks.

It’s not a speech, it’s not an argument, it’s not a presentation. It’s an exchange that feels profound when done right.

As much as I like seeing people playing music when I get on social media, it seems it might be that the tilt toward people using musical energy for that may be causing the playing with other people in the real world to diminish. A small concentrated group of high investment energy from a few in real life is being sacrificed for the hypothetical low investment energy of many remotely.

Help curb the trend! Pick tunes with people in the world!
