Iowa Podiatric Medical Society

Iowa Podiatric Medical Society Podiatry is the branch of medicine specializing in the care and treatment of the human foot and ankle in health and disease.

Founded in 1960 as a component chapter of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), IPMS' primary purpose is to promote foot and ankle health, member service, and professional excellence. Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) are physicians and surgeons who practice on the lower extremities, primarily on feet and ankles. The preparatory education for most DPMs includes four years of undergr

aduate work, followed by four years in an accredited podiatric medical school, and then a minimum of a two-year residency program. IPMS holds an annual three-day Heartland Podiatry Conference in Des Moines to help Podiatrists in Iowa and surrounding states meet their continuing education requirements. CME credited lectures will be presented on a variety of topics. Also included are activities designed to enhance knowledge of the changing healthcare marketplace and economic impact on the specialty of podiatry.

Foot Health Awareness Month reminder as vacation season kicks off... ☀️

From beaches and lakes to rivers and excursions, different activities may call for different footwear—so always check ahead and pack accordingly. When in doubt, bring an extra pair of sneakers or protective water shoes. If your shoes get wet, be sure to dry them completely before wearing again to prevent bacteria or fungus from growing.

And if a foot or ankle injury happens while you’re traveling, don’t wait it out. A podiatric physician can diagnose and begin treatment right away—even while you’re away from home.

Use the Find a Podiatrist tool from American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) to get treatment wherever your travels take you!

Packing a simple foot‑care kit can help prevent small problems from turning into painful setbacks. Think flip‑flops for shared spaces, bandages and blister care, moisturizing creams, sun protection, and basic nail tools. A little preparation can keep your feet comfortable, protected, and summer‑ready wherever you travel.

Another Foot Health Awareness Month tip as we head into warmer weather 💧🦶

Staying hydrated is key—especially as temperatures rise. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will not only help with overall health, but will also minimize any foot swelling caused by the heat. Keep a water bottle nearby and give your feet the care they deserve this summer! American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA)
