Iowa Podiatric Medical Society Podiatry is the branch of medicine specializing in the care and treatment of the human foot and ankle in health and disease.

Founded in 1960 as a component chapter of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), IPMS' primary purpose is to promote foot and ankle health, member service, and professional excellence. Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) are physicians and surgeons who practice on the lower extremities, primarily on feet and ankles. The preparatory education for most DPMs includes four years of undergraduate work, followed by four years in an accredited podiatric medical school, and then a minimum of a two-year residency program. IPMS holds an annual three-day Heartland Podiatry Conference in Des Moines to help Podiatrists in Iowa and surrounding states meet their continuing education requirements. CME credited lectures will be presented on a variety of topics. Also included are activities designed to enhance knowledge of the changing healthcare marketplace and economic impact on the specialty of podiatry.

Earlier this month, the U.S. House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Health held a hearing on multiple bills, including one of APMA’s top priorities, H.R. 7905, the Diabetes Foot Health Access and Modernization Act. While this was an important first step in the House, the same subcommittee must now formally vote to advance the bill to the full committee.
The bill has the endorsement of 75 national, state, and local organizations! You can help build support for H.R. 7905, the Diabetes Foot Health Access and Modernization Act, by calling your U.S. Representatives and asking them to cosponsor the bill today! The Iowa Podiatric Medical Society is pleased to welcome Dr. Sam Rathe, DPM, a first-year podiatrist and new IPMS member. 👏

Born and raised in Ames, Iowa, Dr. Rathe graduated from Ames High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Human Physiology from the University of Iowa. He went on to receive his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery and completed a three-year podiatric surgery residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Now back in Iowa, Dr. Rathe is excited to provide podiatric care in a rural setting through Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. IPMS is proud to welcome Dr. Rathe as he begins his career in practice and serves patients in western Iowa.
