Passing along this powerful post from New Leaders Council and sharing some opportunities to honor and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the Des Moines Metro at the link below:

". . . the white moderate who is more devoted to order than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says, "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically feels that he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time; and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.” ― Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from the Birmingham Jail

As we reflect on the powerful words of Dr. King, let us remember to stay committed in our quest for equity and dismantling systems uprooted in white supremacy, today and every day.

Check out this article about the important work that Matt Becke, a 2018 NLC alum, is doing to reform the criminal justice system and prevent future harm. Here's a snippet: "When Matt Becke walks across the stage in May next year to accept his law degree in the state of Washington, a decade will have passed since he was let out of prison in Iowa.

If he is accepted into the Iowa state bar, a formidable hurdle for a felon, Becke says he will most likely begin practicing criminal law. As someone with multiple convictions tied to ma*****na use, he believes he’ll be able to relate with defendants more than most attorneys.

'I’m seeking the capacity to be a lawyer so I can help people who have been where I have been,' the 36-year-old said. 'But I also want to effect structural change.'

Ma*****na convictions have followed this Iowan long after going to prison, resulting in fines over $17K and hindering him from getting jobs, housing.

Passing along this message and acknowledgement to our NLC Family across the Des Moines metro. Visit Native Land Digital at native-land.ca to learn more about the land you occupy.

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It is a day to honor the resilience of Indigenous peoples, but it is also a day to bring awareness and acknowledgement to the centuries of harm that have been done to them. We know as long as we occupy these lands that were taken from them, that every day is Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

In honor of this day, please take time to look up the land you are on and learn more about its painful history and those who traditionally call it home.

To learn about the land you occupy, please visit Native Land Digital at native-land.ca.
