The new year may start on January 1st, but did you know that the new water year actually started on October 1st?

The water year runs from October 1st to September 30th because total annual precipitation then reflects winter snow accumulation as well as summer rainfall. This measurement calendar helps water managers understand how much water will be available for human uses and ecological processes.

The NOAA Physical Sciences Lab is continuously working to increase understanding of the water cycle through water year research. A project that highlights the work PSL does is updating national probable maximum precipitation estimates through specialized research to improve the safe design, operation, and maintenance of high-risk structures.
