The elder grant assists elderly refugees and immigrants aged 65 and older by providing comprehensive resources to help them overcome isolation and integrate more fully into their communities.

This week they toured the State Capitol. They are anxious to go back when the legislature is in session!

What are your pantry staples?

Our African clients need palm oil,Casava flour ,fufu and fresh produce among other things

You can’t get these at our regular food pantries . Many of the elderly that are part of our elder Grant at AIRTS don’t use any canned food. This really makes it difficult to find appropriate food.

We are pleased to announce our new pop up pantry stocked with needed items. It is held the last Friday of the month at our office.

If you would like to donate you can use PayPal and search African Immigrant Refugee Transition Services

🎉Exciting News!🎉

On July 25,2025, AIRTS hosted our very first food pantry event for our elderly client and it was success🙌

We welcomed 25 clients and distributed over 300 pounds of culturally relevant food, including:
🍚120 Ibs of rice
🥣 140 Ibs of fufu
🫘 60 Ibs of beans
🧂 salts, palm oil and more

We're also grateful to have provided a First Aid Kit to ensure basic health and safety support for our clients.

We're proud to support our community with food that feels like home.🧡

A special thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!

The recent federal directive has halted essential services for refugees already resettled in our state. This abrupt decision has left many families in Des Moines without the necessary support to rebuild their lives. The impact is far-reaching, affecting all organizations working to provide critical services such as housing, employment, education, and healthcare. As we continue our efforts to support these families, we call on our community to lend their support through donations, volunteerism, and advocacy. Your support is vital in helping these organizations maintain these essential services and demonstrate that Iowa remains a place of refuge and opportunity for those seeking a better life.

As an ethnic community-based organization, AIRTS remains open and committed to welcoming these devastated families through our doors. We are here for you and continue to work tirelessly to assist in any way we can. Together, we can ensure that these families find the support they need to rebuild their lives and thrive in our community.

Two Des Moines resettlement agencies say they will serve the 309 new arrivals they already welcomed to Iowa, despite a federal stop work order.
