Not every skilled trade involves a hard hat and a hammer.

At IUPAT District Council 81, our Ace of Trades students explored the painters and allied trades through hands-on demonstrations and projects. From hanging wallpaper and applying caulk to learning finish work techniques, students experienced the precision and craftsmanship these careers require.

We’re proud to celebrate Sara Wodka, Talent Collective DSM’s Postsecondary Career Coach for Health Sciences, on being selected for the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute Class of 2027 through Lead DSM!

Sara’s work is all about what comes next. She supports students as they navigate education, training, and the transition into careers in healthcare, helping them turn their goals into real opportunities.

Not everyone gets to spend a day where Iowa’s energy workforce is trained.

Our Ace of Trades students visited MidAmerican Energy’s Training Center for Excellence, where they explored careers in the energy industry, learned from experienced professionals, and stepped into hands-on training used by future lineworkers and utility crews.

From the classroom to the training yard, students experienced what it takes to help keep our communities powered.

Ten students. One week. A whole lot of possibilities.

Talent Collective DSM students spent a week at Holmes Murphy through the Discover YOU program, getting a behind-the-scenes look at different areas of the company and career paths they may not have considered before.

They explored new roles, connected with professionals and wrapped up the experience by presenting a capstone project to company leaders.

Because sometimes a career first starts with discovering a path you didn’t know existed.

For Anfa, the biggest first wasn’t a job, an internship, or a credential. It was realizing she had a future beyond high school.

The Roosevelt junior admits she had never been clear about what came next. Through Talent Collective DSM, she started talking with her career coaches, visiting local businesses, and meeting professionals across different industries. Some experiences showed her what she wanted. Others helped her figure out what she didn’t. And somewhere along the way, a career in health sciences started to feel like a place she could belong.

“When I joined the program, I realized I have a future beyond high school.”

Anfa doesn’t have every step figured out yet. But the future is no longer one big question mark. Today, she says she feels confident, hopeful, and optimistic about what comes next.

That’s a first worth investing in.
