One of the things I enjoy most about learning the history of AHEPA is discovering the many ways our predecessors made our organization visible within their communities.

In the early decades of AHEPA, chapters across the country formed highly disciplined groups known as "Patrols." These Patrols participated in parades, conventions, civic celebrations, and public events, proudly representing both AHEPA and the ideals for which our organization stands. Chapters in places such as Lowell and Boston, Massachusetts and Winston-Salem, North Carolina became known for their Patrols. In 1936, the Boston Patrol even served as the honorary es**rt for an AHEPA District Convention.

These Patrols were more than ceremonial groups. They were a visible reminder of AHEPA's mission. At a time when Greek immigrants faced discrimination and prejudice, AHEPA members marched proudly through their communities, demonstrating patriotism, civic responsibility, and their commitment to becoming active contributors to American society.

While the original Patrols have long since disappeared, the need for AHEPA visibility has not.

With that in mind, we are looking for those interested in helping establish an Ambassador Patrol. The goal would be simple: To represent AHEPA at local community events such as Memorial Day parades, Fourth of July parades, veterans' observances, and other civic celebrations throughout the Des Moines metro area.

This is not the Patrol of old, but a new tradition inspired by the past. No military experience, marching expertise, or special skills are required, just a willingness to have fun, spend time with fellow brothers, and help promote AHEPA within our community…and throw some candy. Participation would also provide a great opportunity to honor our organization's history while creating new traditions for future generations.

Our first opportunity may be the Urbandale Fourth of July Parade, and I would like to gauge interest before moving forward with additional planning.

If you are interested in joining or at least having the discussing, please send a message here on Facebook or email Nicholos Nopoulos. Even if you are only available for a few events each year, I would love to hear from you.

Together, we can help ensure that AHEPA remains visible, active, and engaged in the communities we serve.

Today, on AHEPA Sunday, we proudly reflect on the enduring mission of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association and its unwavering commitment to Hellenism, Orthodoxy, philanthropy, education, and service.

In his 2026 Archepiscopal Encyclical, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros reminds us that “to be Greek is truly a civilizational project,” emphasizing the vital role AHEPA plays in strengthening our faith, preserving our heritage, and serving both our communities and the broader American society.

Working hand in hand with our parishes and faithful, AHEPA continues to uphold the highest ideals of Hellenism and Orthodox Christianity — welcoming all, fostering leadership, and inspiring future generations.

As we celebrate AHEPA Sunday, we give thanks for the countless contributions of our members across the globe and reaffirm our dedication to Faith, Family, and Philanthropy.

In the early days of AHEPA, before much of our structure and ritual work were standardized, chapters often borrowed inspiration from other fraternal organizations. Case in point: Miami Chapter 14, circa 1930, where officers donned regalia reminiscent of I.O.O.F. lodges.

Fast forward to today, and I happened to stumble across something on Marketplace that immediately made me chuckle…

It got me thinking: I wonder if our Sentinel might be interested in a bit of vintage flair making a comeback.
