Staff were challenged to reflect on daily interactions, let go of frustrations and bond together with a fun game of Jeopardy and a scavenger hunt. We enjoyed our time at the Kiewit Luminarium in Omaha.

Catholic Charities Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Program held the United Way of the Midlands Day of Caring in Council Bluffs. We welcomed back four volunteers from BlueCross Blue Shield Nebraska, who joined them for their fifth consecutive year. They helped clean up the outdoor areas around the shelter.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming four first-time volunteers from FNBO, Lincoln Financial and Union Pacific. These volunteers helped prepare packages for registrants for the upcoming Community Baby Shower on October 10th in Council Bluffs. This crew assembled resource packets that will be distributed during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

Thank you everyone for all your help! We are truly blessed to have new and returning volunteers. 💜

During Hunger Action Month, help by donating your time or funds to support our food pantry. Empower Individuals and Strengthen Families by removing the stress to find their next meal.

The Catholic Charities Food Pantry has served our community for over 40 years. Our Food Pantry guests’ numbers have increased and will only continue to rise. There has been a 34% increase in daily clients and 45% increase in monthly clients over the past year.

These numbers reflect individuals and families, including children, and an increasing number of senior citizens in our community.

The Community Baby Shower is held each year in October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Catholic Charities Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault program will host its 12th Annual Community Baby Shower on Saturday, October 10th from 2-4PM in Council Bluffs to support new and expecting parents and families with newborns. 🍼💜

Location: Boys and Girls Club, Lakin Campus, 815 N 16th St, Council Bluffs, IA 51501

Registration is required by Monday, October 5.

Catholic Charities Emergency Family Shelter was generously gifted household gifts for the shelter. United Way shared that two Extended Stay Hotels had been sold, and they offered these items to Catholic Charities other and nonprofits in the area.

Our team received 20 end tables, 20 lamps, a couple of end tables, coffee tables and various artwork. 🖼🪑🪞

We are incredibly blessed by this opportunity to have our shelter guests and families utilize these household items to feel comfortable and at home during their stay! 💜

As an overnight shelter staff member and a nursing student at DMACC, Damaris Brown’s work goes above and beyond at the Emergency Family Shelter.

“We have such a good team, almost like a family together. We keep in-touch with everybody,” Brown said.

“The program really helped my close friend. They always said the shelter always brought them joy. They were able to help get them back on their feet and now are able to work and pay their bills. The shelter made them a better person.”

Xiemna Lopez, Brown’s sister, also works at the shelter. Brown encouraged her sister to join the team. Lopez recently graduated from East High School and has been with the team for roughly a month. The Emergency Family Shelter staff is as described, “almost like a family.”
