We Need To Do More

The Garage, home of CrossFit 8035 has been a downtown Des Moines presence for nearly a decade. We have always aimed to give back with blood drives, fundraisers and supportive events. But we need to do better. We need to do more. And we need to do it now. So we are committing to change, and positive community contributions. I'm working with some really amazing people to launch a non-profit organization that supports underserved populations. Through inclusive fitness, we will create a culture of support and empowerment.

Today, we filed for a 501(c) non-profit named 8035 Traction. We want to do more than talk; we want to act, and up to this point we haven't done enough - this non-profit organization will support small group/class programs designed specifically for underserved populations in an effort to break down barriers to entry, and empower through strength training and nutritional guidance/support. For the next few weeks I am meeting with local leaders and organizations to get input, feedback, and develop potential partnerships. Initially, we will focus on 3 unique groups: neighborhood minorities (individuals living in a 1-2 mile radius of our Downtown gym), victims of domestic abuse (female-only group), and adults with mental or physical disabilities. These groups will have their own uniquely designed class 1x/week, a group mentor for social support, a lead coach qualified to provide the best experience, and hopefully healthy prepped meals to take home after each class. We'd also love to be able to help with workout clothing or shoes if the need is there. Our goal is to provide a support system and means of improved living, whether that be physical, mental and/or emotional. And if a participant decides to join our standard classes, we will work to offer sponsored/scholarship memberships to eliminate financial barriers.

This is all in the VERY early stages of development, but we have a clear vision for contributing to our community in the best way we know how, and providing a more inclusive and barrier-free option for populations we believe we can impact the most long-term. We have the facility and resources to make a difference, and we are determined to do so.

Stay tuned for developments. For now, I'd love for you to "like" our page, and reach out if you have contacts that might be a good starting point for input, ideas and partnerships.
