Merle Hay Neighborhood Association The Merle Hay Neighborhood Association (MHNA) is a volunteer-driven 501 (c)(3) nonprofit. Our motto is “Working Together to Make a Difference.”

The Merle Hay Neighborhood Association (MHNA) is a volunteer-driven 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve quality of life and foster a sense of community pride through citizen participation. Our motto is “Working Together to Make a Difference.” Our volunteers strive to make northwest Des Moines an even better place to live, work, and play. MHNA’s bylaws were adopted and off

icers were elected on January 26, 2000. The association was formally recognized by the City of Des Moines on April 3, 2000. Articles of incorporation were issued on December 12, 2003. The IRS approved MHNA’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in July 2004.

Had a great night at National Night Out tonight, despite the rain. Good thing Tower Park has a large shelter! We even made it on channel 13 news! Thank you to all of our vendors who braved the rain to join us: Banker's Trust, IHMVCU, Neighborhood Finance Corp, and AMOS. And a very special Thank You to all of our donors and volunteers. Beginning September 30, 2026, Polk and Dallas County and its cities will transition to a single Public Safety opt-in list in the Smart 911 Alerting System.

If you're currently signed up for alerts from an individual city, you will need to subscribe to the new Public Safety list before September 30 to continue receiving local emergency alerts. Because Smart 911 is an opt-in system, existing subscribers cannot be moved automatically.

What this means:

✅ You'll still receive alerts for your community

✅ Emergency alerts will be targeted to your home, work, and/or school addresses using geographic filters

✅ One list creates a faster, more consistent alerting process during emergencies

The Polk County Extreme Temperature Plan will be activated on Sunday, June 28, at 4pm and remain in effect until further notice.

Activation of the plan includes:

• activation of cooling centers,
• weather amnesty at area homeless shelters, and
• free access to these locations on DART buses. DART
