One way to keep our waterways clean is to nurture native vegetation along its banks. Strong roots resist bank erosion. Thick grass and brush filter runoff before it enters our water while also expanding habitats for local wildlife.

Iowa has numerous programs working to expand the greenery along our rivers and streams. Find local conservation groups and nonprofit organizations to learn more about helping your neighboring water ways.

What are our drinking water sources? In Iowa, 46% of the population receives their drinking water from surface sources like lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. The majority of Iowans rely on groundwater using wells to pull water out of aquifers underground. All water sources can be impaired by pollution so we should all do our part keeping our water clean!
