Food insecurity is about more than having enough food. It can affect your mental health, your family, and your ability to get through the day.

On October 29, My City My Health is bringing the conversation into the community.

We're partnering with Knock and Drop Iowa and NAMI Iowa for a My City Talks conversation about the connection between food insecurity and mental health.

We want to hear from the community, talk about what's happening, and explore how we can better support one another.

URGENT COMMUNITY NEED

With all the recent rain, we have a family whose basement has taken in a significant amount of water. The moisture and dampness have become so severe that when they go into the basement, they are having difficulty breathing.

They urgently need a dehumidifier to help remove the moisture and begin drying out their home.

If anyone has a dehumidifier they can donate, or would like to make a monetary donation toward purchasing one, please let us know. They need one as soon as possible.

Even sharing this post may help us reach someone who can help this family.

1 in 8 cancer cases worldwide may be linked to an infection.

According to research from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, approximately 2 million cancer cases in 2024—about 12% of all cancer cases worldwide—were attributable to infectious agents.

One number especially stands out to us:

HPV: approximately 745,900 cancer cases.

HPV doesn't only affect women. HPV can cause several types of cancer in both men and women, including cervical, a**l, pe**le, va**nal, v***ar, and some head and neck cancers.

But there is something powerful about this information: prevention is possible.

The HPV vaccine can prevent infections from HPV types responsible for most HPV-related cancers.

This is why we continue having these conversations in our communities. Education matters. Access matters. Vaccination matters.

Sometimes a person simply hasn't been given the information they need to make an informed decision about their health.

Cancer prevention starts with knowledge—and knowledge should be accessible to everyone.

1 de cada 8 casos de cáncer en el mundo puede estar relacionado con una infección.

Según una investigación de la Agencia Internacional para la Investigación del Cáncer de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, aproximadamente 2 millones de casos de cáncer en 2024 —cerca del 12% de todos los casos a nivel mundial— estuvieron relacionados con agentes infecciosos.

Hay una cifra que especialmente nos llama la atención:

VPH (Virus del Papiloma Humano): aproximadamente 745,900 casos de cáncer.

El VPH no afecta solamente a las mujeres. Puede causar diferentes tipos de cáncer tanto en hombres como en mujeres, incluyendo cáncer de cuello uterino, ano, pene, va**na, v***a y algunos cánceres de cabeza y cuello.

Pero hay algo muy importante que debemos recordar: la prevención es posible.

La vacuna contra el VPH puede prevenir infecciones causadas por los tipos de VPH responsables de la mayoría de los cánceres relacionados con este virus.

Por eso seguimos llevando estas conversaciones a nuestras comunidades.

La educación importa. El acceso importa. La vacunación importa.

Muchas veces, una persona simplemente no ha recibido la información que necesita para tomar una decisión informada sobre su salud.

La prevención del cáncer comienza con el conocimiento, y ese conocimiento debe estar al alcance de todos.

Today in Council Bluffs, Iowa, we saw exactly why education matters.

We had an incredible event where 30 people received their flu vaccine and 8 received the HPV vaccine. But one moment stood out above all the numbers.

A young man listened as we shared the story and talked about HPV prevention. At first, he chose not to get vaccinated because he believed the HPV vaccine was only for women.

He left.

Then, as we were wrapping up for the day, he came back.

He asked, “Can I still get the HPV vaccine?”

Our answer was YES.

Even though we were finished for the day, we weren’t going to turn him away after education had empowered him to make a decision about his health.

He received his HPV vaccine and thanked us. He told us he truly thought HPV vaccination was only for women and that men didn’t need it. Now, not only did he leave vaccinated—he left with knowledge he can share with others.

This is why we do what we do.

Sometimes success is counted in numbers: 30 flu vaccines. 8 HPV vaccines.

But sometimes success is one person who hears the information, walks away, thinks about it, comes back, and makes a different decision because he now understands.

And that one person may go on to educate many more.

Education creates awareness. Awareness creates action. And action can save lives.
