Perth. Alice Springs. Katherine. Darwin. Palmerston. Wagga Wagga. Newcastle. Gold Coast. Bankstown. Cumberland.

Ten communities. Ten Abilities Unleashed events so far this term, with more still to come.

Abilities Unleashed is an introduction to sport. People with disability try a range of activities delivered by local clubs, helping them find opportunities close to home.

More than 850 people have taken part so far across Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales.

But an event is only the beginning.

Participation grows when local opportunities continue beyond a single day. It grows when people can return week after week. It grows when sport is supported to create opportunities that last.

That takes ongoing investment.

That is what monthly giving makes possible.

Become a Trailblazer. Our monthly supporters help create opportunities for people with disability to take part in sport in more communities across Australia.

For more than 65 years, the organisations that became Disability Sports Australia have helped shape disability sport in this country.

Last week, our members voted to adopt a new Constitution that reflects how the sport has changed since then.

We were formed from three distinct movements: wheelchair sport, amputee and locomotor disability sport, and cerebral palsy sport.

Our predecessors coordinated Australia's early Paralympic teams and built national championships nationwide.

Three were founding members of Paralympics Australia.

This is not a departure from that history. It is the contemporary continuation of it.

“Sport has taught me so much besides just politics.”

Liesl Tesch AM. Member for Gosford. Seven time Paralympian.

Wheelchair basketball across five Paralympic Games. Sailing at two. Gold in London. Gold in Rio.

“My communication skills, my passion, my advocacy for inclusion. So much of it stems from sport. That’s given me a platform to be where I am now.”

Sport creates more than athletes. It builds pathways into leadership, community and public life.

Through Changing Lives Through Sport, more than 1.19 million Australians engaged with stories from people with disability and the wider sporting community. Each one showing how participation in sport translates into real world outcomes.

Changing Lives Through Sport returns later in 2026.

Five years of the Participation Leaders Network reflects something important across Australian sport.

Participation is increasingly being recognised as more than activity or numbers. It is about connection, belonging and social cohesion.

As our CEO Ayden Shaw said: "How do we use sport as a vehicle for social change? That's what participation needs to focus on, because the value sport provides is more than just health and physical activity benefits."

Thank you to the Australian Sports Commission and the Participation Leaders Network for creating space to challenge thinking, share learning and strengthen sport across Australia.

One year ago on Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we launched a strategy focused on choice, participation and building the capability of sport across Australia.

This week, our constitution reflects it.

Our members voted to update the Disability Sports Australia constitution. It reflects how we work today. Supporting people with disability to take part in sport in the way that works for them. Disability specific sport, mainstream sport, or both.

Our members are a diverse network of organisations working across many sports and roles, united by a shared focus on disability sport at the grassroots level. Our constitution now more clearly reflects that.

People with disability have the right to take part in sport on an equal basis with others, in ways that work for them.
