The “rock animals” along the Derry Rail Trail in New Hampshire are just a few of the creative and fun sights you’ll see along this 3.4-mile paved pathway through woods, wetlands, and quiet stretches of town. This easy walking and biking trail runs between Derry and Windham, with peaceful spots where you may see herons, ducks, turtles, or beavers near the water. The trail also adds a fun touch of art along the way, including painted stone animals like a beaver, frog, lizard, and turtle. One of its most meaningful features is an illustrated version of Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken,” a tribute to the poet who once taught at nearby Pinkerton Academy. Frost also lived in Derry from 1900 to 1911, and many of his New England memories were tied to those years. It’s a scenic, easy, and surprisingly creative New Hampshire trail.
