Citizen of the Month
Beauregard Arc

Raymond Pickering’s story begins in Port Arthur, Texas, where he was born at Jefferson County Hospital. One of three siblings, a brother, a sister, and himself—Raymond grew up surrounded by family, a bond that has remained important throughout his life. Today, he lives with his sister in Merryville, Louisiana. Raymond dreams of having his own apartment in DeRidder, a place where he can be closer to his job & friends.

Raymond’s childhood and school years took him across Texas and Louisiana. He attended elementary school near Merryville, then moved on to middle school in the Vidor, Texas area. His high school years were split between Hyatt High in Fields, Louisiana, and Tara High in Baton Rouge. Throughout his education, Raymond was enrolled in special education classes, and he worked hard earning his high school diploma, something he remains proud of.

As a young adult, Raymond found work at a movie theater, where he served as a ticket clerk and helped with custodial duties. He enjoyed the structure of the job and the chance to interact with people, even if he remained naturally quiet. Today, he brings that same dedication to his work in the recycling department through BArc’s supported employment program. He has built friendships there, discovered a sense of belonging, and proven himself to be a dependable, eager worker who takes pride in doing things well.

Raymond is an avid reader who can lose himself in books for hours. Routine and structure bring him comfort, and he thrives when he knows what to expect from his day. He enjoys joking with peers, spending time on his cell phone, and being part of a social environment where he feels accepted and understood. His friendly nature and willingness to help make him a joy to be around.

Raymond’s life is a story of quiet strength, intelligence, and perseverance. From the challenges he has faced to the relationships he has built, he continues to move forward with determination, kindness, and a genuine desire to be part of his community. His journey reflects not only where he has been, but the independence and stability he hopes to achieve in the years ahead.

School started last week, and while students may not be using their phones during the school day, it’s still important to know what they’re doing online when those phones are back in their hands.

Many popular apps offer features such as private or disappearing messages, live streaming, location sharing, and the ability to connect with people they may not know. Understanding how these apps work can help parents and guardians make informed decisions and better protect children online.

This list is not meant to include every app out there, but it does highlight several popular platforms families should be aware of. Take a few minutes to review the apps your child uses, talk openly about online safety, and set clear expectations for responsible digital behavior. It’s also a good idea to use the parental controls and child-safety settings available on phones and tablets, including requiring approval before new apps can be downloaded.
