How’s THIS for a crew!!! A visit special from the legendary Monahan brothers who started as 13 and 11 year old campers and who…to this day…almost 25 years later will drop everything on a moments notice if I’m short handed! Dan The Man..who stayed til 9:00pm many nights this summer scraping and painting and weeding and repairing anything and everything. Pedro, who in 23 years, has never called out sick and left me in a lurch! Scott who was on site for EVERY MINUTE of the summer…open to close…all day everyday. The list goes on from all my counselors who played with and cared for your kids all summer to the waterfront staff who remained vigilant from the opening minute until the last kid got out of the water yesterday at 4:00pm! Truly an amazing group of individuals!
I’m re-using a portion of the end of this post because the message still rings true. If you haven’t already, pick up a copy of the New York Time’s bestseller, The Anxious Generation, by Johnathan Haidt. The research shows that what we’ve been doing with your kids for at least the last 24 years…is actually really healthy for them!
We succeeded in getting your kids to play outside...all day...every day...make friends...be safe....have fun...be nice to people....learn a few things about themselves...learn a few things about life...learn how to share...learn (without helicopter parents) how to work out differences...yet learn that WE'RE ALL BASICALLY THE SAME no matter what color we are or how much money we have in our bank accounts.
We all wonder where that world went? We're tellin' ya'...there were glimpses of it for 8 weeks this summer...on those hot, sweaty days, on the days we were trapped inside all day, on the days we swam in the river ALL day, across at the field, in the Rec Room...it was there...at our place....our place that's always been there...110 years and counting!!!
We'll be there next summer too...right on RT. 34 in Derby...where we've always been. It seems like these days anyone buys a pop-up tent and a folding table and calls themselves “a camp”, but I can assure you…there’s NOTHING like “The Rec Camp” anywhere in the Valley!
