2013 Festival Postponed

Derby Days strives to create a festival that appeals to the entire community with quality events, family entertainment and support from local organizations to promote community involvement.

In accordance with the above Mission Statement, Derby Days is a committee comprised of local volunteers and has been an ongoing part of this community for 35 years. Most citizens do not know that it is entirely funded by donations and staffed by volunteers. Over the years it has become more difficult to obtain donations as well as volunteers. Community involvement has dwindled, and changes in the economy have resulted in an increased cost of running the festival.

The carnival is typically the largest draw and the largest expense for guests to Derby Days. However, the committee has no control over the cost or availability of the carnival. Ottaway Amusements has been a long-term supporter of Derby Days. To keep offering this nationally renowned carnival the committee was forced to change to Father’s Day weekend due to a conflict with the River Festival several years ago. The timing and weather of the revised date has had an adverse effect on the festival.

With the exception of the carnival, the buttons and donations fund the remainder of the festival, from the musical acts, entertainers and supplies for KidsFest; to facilities, utilities, rental equipment, insurance, trash, janitorial service, etc.

Derby Days is an asset to our community and the time-honored, family oriented tradition will be missed this summer. The festival will be postponed this year, however, we hope to rally the support of the community, local government, local businesses and churches, to revive and support this festival.

Any citizen or business willing to volunteer time or resources is encouraged to contact us or contact your local officials and let them know what Derby Days means to the City of Derby!

I keep trying to find/think of something interesting to post on this page periodically, but I haven't come up with anything. I've tried to find festival, carnival, or fair related jokes - kid-friendly, of course, but no luck. If anyone has any ideas, or anything that you'd like to see during the times where there aren't any real Derby Days updates, let me know. I'm happy to post things when I have time, to try to keep this page interesting. Thanks, everyone!! :-)

Also, thank you, Linda at The Derby Informer, for all your hard work. We really do appreciate all that you do!! You have been a lifesaver to probably each of us at one time or another, and for that, we are grateful. :-D

And thanks to Monica, also at the Informer, for working with me when it wasn't even your story. You were very helpful when you could have just said to call back and talk to Linda. ;-)

We have a lot of pictures to post, and I will try to do that tomorrow. My brain is overflowing with ideas for next year, so I'm feverishly typing it all out.

If *you* have ideas or suggestions of things that you'd like to see at Derby Days, let us know. We want to hear from you!!

We also need volunteers. If you want to volunteer, we would *love* to have you. Contact us, give us your contact information, and we will contact you early in the year to find the right fit for you. We had a few people ask us about volunteering during the event this year, and we are *SO* excited about how great Derby Days can be with your help!!

To All of Our Visitors, Vendors, Sponsors, and Volunteers - Thank you!!!! :-D We had a wonderful time this year, and hope that you did, too!!! We could not have done it without all of you! We want to be sure to specifically say thank you to our wonderful volunteers Melanie Pratt & Boy Scout Troop 692, Jackie Haynes, Mark Haynes, Jessica Whiteman, and Aviator Church. We also want to thank all of the people whose specific information is not known to me... the Girl Scouts that helped with KidFest (I apologize, but I don't know your troop number); Chris Macias' Soccer Team (I believe it's soccer... :-S); everyone that helped me (Angie) set up ShopFest late Friday evening by bringing the tables in from outside (I have no idea who all of you people are, but you were awesome!!); and some unnamed man (or unknown to me, anyway) that worked security, helped sell buttons, and then, as if that wasn't enough, came back Sunday and helped remove tables and chairs. I'm sure that I am forgetting someone. If you or someone else you know helped out, we thank you too!! You can feel free to comment on here and let us know!! :-D

You were all instrumental in making this year's event such a success!! We hope that you all had a good time and can join us next year. If anyone else would like to help continue this Derby tradition, we encourage you to contact us here on Facebook or on our website www.derbydaysks.com. We have a LOT of ideas about how to improve Derby Days for vendors, visitors, and volunteers next year, but we need your help and want to hear what you think to make it happen.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!! :-D :-D :-D
