Happy St. Patrick's Day from the ACIS 2026 Conference Organizers!

Did you know the state of Colorado has some interesting Irish History?

Leadville, Colorado was once known as the "Silver Capital" of the West, drawing in thousands of Irish immigrant miners and workers from across the country in the 19th-century. This drew in immigrants from the Beara Peninsula where copper mining strategies and expertise was needed to access minerals like silver buried deep beneath Leadville's surface. However, many only made about $3 a day working long hours in the mines in gruesome working conditions. This led to a series of strikes and campaigns to fight for better working conditions.

The lives of hundreds of Irish and non-Irish immigrants are recognized today on the Leadville Irish Pauper Memorial in Evergreen Cemetery, unveiled in 2023. In honoring these individuals who were forgotten, the memorial serves as a reminder of the legacies of working-class labor and how stories of immigration unite us all today.
