For seventeen years — beginning back in my student days — I worked in journalism: first as a reporter for Dnepr Vechernii, and later as the director of a press center and a live broadcast host at the TV channel Vidkrytyi.
My days were filled with meetings, interviews, filming sessions, and conversations with people of every possible profession and destiny.
Over time, I began to notice in myself an almost mystical ability: even a brief exchange allowed me to see in a person more than they were ready to reveal.
Obviously, years in the media teach you how to read people with precision — and I mastered this art quite early.
Naturally, there were periods of burnout. At times it felt as if I had conducted enough interviews for several lifetimes. And yet, strangely, it never diminished my love for the profession. Journalism was my mission, my air, my meaning. People sensed that: they opened their hearts to me, entrusted me with the most intimate parts of their lives — even with cameras pointed at them or a recorder in hand.
A separate, deeply transformative part of my work became the interviews with those whose lives were forever changed by the war that began in eastern Ukraine in 2014. These were soldiers newly returned from the front line, Donbas residents who fled to Dnipro under shelling, mothers of the fallen, volunteers who held the world together with their bare hands. Those conversations lived somewhere on the edge — between past and future, pain and hope, loss and resilience. They shaped in me a new understanding of human fragility and astonishing endurance.
I published these stories regularly in the pages of Dnepr Vechernii, trying to show the home front what the war really looked like — a reality that was still difficult to fully believe.
And then one day, abruptly and irreversibly, my career in Ukrainian journalism ended. I moved to the United States.
For many, it was hard to understand how one could leave a beloved profession at the height of experience and success.
People who knew me well could not believe I had simply pressed “stop” — that I no longer wrote, organized press conferences, hosted broadcasts, or gathered information.
But I knew one thing: a new, no less meaningful chapter of my life had begun.
For many years, I had studied the fates of thousands of people and published just as many stories. And now, finally, I had time to gather some of them into a book — specifically the ones that pierced my journalistic armor and left a painful mark. These are texts about the war that began with the occupation of Crimea and Donbas and continues to take the lives of people from my homeland to this day.
The collection Changed by War is the result of six years of work — a time when journalism stopped being merely a profession and became a service to the history of Ukraine.
Six years of conversations, recordings, observations, and moments that must never be forgotten.
The more you listen to these voices, the clearer it becomes: war cannot be explained. But you can preserve the traces of those who went through it.

Цілих сімнадцять років — ще від студентських часів — я працювала в журналістиці: спочатку репортеркою у газеті «Днепр вечерний», згодом директоркою пресцентру та ведучою прямих ефірів на телеканалі «Відкритий».
Мої дні минали у постійних зустрічах, інтерв’ю, зйомках і розмовах з людьми найрізноманітніших професій та доль.
З часом я помітила в собі майже містичну здатність: навіть коротка розмова дозволяла побачити в людині більше, ніж вона сама була готова про себе сказати.
Очевидно, роки роботи в медіа вчать тонко відчувати людей — і я опанувала це мистецтво доволі рано.
Звісно, траплялися й періоди вигорання. Іноді здавалося, що я взяла інтерв’ю на кілька життів уперед. Та, як не дивно, любов до професії від цього не меншала. Журналістика була моєю місією, моїм повітрям, моїм сенсом. І люди це відчували: вони відкривали мені свої душі, ділилися найдорожчим — навіть під прицілом камер або на диктофон.
Окремою частиною моєї роботи стали інтерв’ю з тими, чиї життя назавжди змінилися після початку війни на Сході України у 2014 році.
Це бійці, які щойно повернулися з передової, мешканці Донбасу, що втекли до Дніпра від обстрілів, матері загиблих, волонтери, котрі тримали світ на своїх плечах.
Ці розмови існували наче на межі — між минулим і майбутнім, болем і надією, втратою й незламністю. Вони сформували в мені нове розуміння людської крихкості й неймовірної стійкості.
Я регулярно публікувала ці історії на сторінках «Дніпра вечірнього», намагаючись показати читачеві в тилу ту воєнну реальність, у яку тоді ще важко було до кінця повірити.
Раптово, різко й безповоротно, одного дня моя журналістська кар’єра в Україні завершилася. Я переїхала до США.
Багатьом було складно збагнути, як можна покинути улюблену справу в момент професійної зрілості, на піку успіху. Ті, хто добре мене знав, не могли повірити, що я просто натиснула «стоп» і перестала робити те, що вміла найкраще: писати, організовувати пресконференції, вести ефіри, збирати інформацію.
Але я знала одне: у моєму житті настав інший, не менш цікавий етап.
За багато років я вивчила долі тисяч людей, опублікувала не меншу кількість матеріалів. І тепер нарешті з’явився час зібрати деякі з цих історій у книгу — саме ті, які змогли пробити мою журналістську броню, залишивши свій болючий слід. Це тексти про війну, що почалася з окупації Криму та Донбасу й досі продовжує забирати життя моїх земляків.
Збірка «Змінені війною» — результат шести років моєї роботи, коли журналістика перестала бути просто професією й стала служінням історії України. Шість років розмов, записів, спостережень і епізодів, які необхідно запам’ятати назавжди.
Чим більше слухаєш ці голоси, тим ясніше розумієш: війну неможливо пояснити. Але можна зберегти сліди тих, хто пройшов крізь неї.
Цю збірку можна почати читати з будь-якої сторінки. У ній віддзеркалені всі грані воєнної реальності: смерть і біль, любов і народження творчих ідей, сміливість і несподівані прориви.
Це книга про біль усієї нації, але водночас вона надихає — адже в ній живе сила тих, хто вистояв.
