This past weekend, A4J and AAF presented at KAAN’s annual gathering in Denver, CO. We spoke with domestic and intercountry adoptees, adoptive parents, and loved ones about the need to and !

Each time we join these events, people are floored. They don’t understand how — or why — adoptees weren’t granted the automatic citizenship that is rightfully theirs. And like all of us, they’re dismayed that some adoptees have been deported. Each event and each conversation is an opportunity for us to learn from each other, uplift our impacted community members, and garner support for federal solutions.

We are so thankful for these opportunities, and for our volunteers and leaders who continue to share their stories and connect with our community about this issue! 💗

GREAT NEWS ALERT! 🎉

One of our community members, Heidi, officially became a US citizen this week! After a long, arduous journey, she took her oath and now has the citizenship that is rightfully hers as an adopted child of American parents. 🙌🏼🇺🇸

She shared: “Today, I became an American citizen with a heart full of gratitude and hope. This milestone would not have been possible without the unwavering support, advocacy, and community of the HANA Center, Adoptees for Justice, NAKASEC, and Senator Gary Peters. Their dedication to justice, belonging, and empowerment helped make this journey possible. I am honored to take this step forward and excited to contribute to the country I now proudly call home.”

Congratulations, Heidi! We are so, so happy for you. ❤️

Last month, A4J Policy Manager Amanda Cho and a dedicated team of lead A4J volunteers traveled to Seoul, South Korea, to participate in the Overseas Korean Adoptee Leadership Conference. Hosted by the Overseas Korean Agency (OKA), OKA annually gathers Korean adoptees from around the world to discuss issues and solutions.

Throughout the week, the A4J team met with leaders from Overseas Korean agencies, the National Center for the Rights of the Child (NCRC), the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), G.O.A.’L representatives, and Korean adoptee leaders and advocates from around the world.

Together, they spent long days collaborating on policy proposals grounded in the lived experiences of adoptees, urging the Korean government to continue strengthening support for Korean adoptees worldwide. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to these important conversations and help advance adoptee-centered policies for the global Korean adoptee community.

Read “Picked Up at 9 Months,” a powerful, poignant,
heartbreaking poem written by T, an adoptee without citizenship.

Adoptees like T are the reason we continue to fight for automatic citizenship for adoptees and for adoptees to come home.

Thank you, T, for sharing your art with us. ❤️‍🩹

Join us in fighting to bring adoptees home and grant adoptees the automatic citizenship the U.S. and adoption agencies promised!

The 2000 Child Citizenship had a terrible flaw: an arbitrary cutoff date created a loophole that excluded older generations of adoptees from the automatic citizenship granted to others — the automatic citizenship that is rightfully theirs.

A loophole should not define belonging. The PAAF has been introduced in the House and Senate and has strong bipartisan support ***because adoptee citizenship is NOT a partisan issue.***

J is an adoptee who was adopted as a child by an American military doctor and missionary. Her parents brought her to the United States with the promise of becoming a full member of their American family.

Without citizenship, this promise has been unfulfilled. The US has the opportunity to fix their mistakes and pass the Protect Adoptees and American Families (PAAF) Act. Together we can bring adoptees home and fulfill the promises made to J and others like her.

🚨 , it’s time to fight to pass the Protect Adoptees and American Families (PAAF) Act‼️

Even though adoptees were brought to the United States to form American families – and even though this was led by agencies like Holt International — citizenship wasn’t secured for all adoptees. This massive flaw means that some adoptees have been subject to detention and deportation, and are still separated from their families and homes.

The PAAF would repair existing legislation so that all adoptees who were legally adopted by American parents are granted **automatic U.S. citizenship.** It would allow adoptees who have been deported a path to come home – and it would finally grant adoptees equal rights as any American’s biological children. Over 65 organizations agree: , it’s time to join the fight to pass the PAAF and bring adoptees home.
